Dr. Alan Miller will be officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Betty Kinney was born in Wilmot, AR, on July 8, 1936, to the union of Leon and Jewel Adams, and passed away April 22, 2015, in West Monroe. Mrs. Betty graduated Valedictorian and "Most Likely to Succeed" from her high school in Wilmot, AR. Mrs. Betty was proud of the fact that she was personally recognized by the Governor of Arkansas for scoring highest on university placement examinations, but chose to start a family. "Bloom where you are planted" was a phrase she exemplified. Mrs. Betty moved to the Monroe area in the 1960s and remained here until her death. Mrs. Betty could truly make the absolute best of any situation. In what would be her final days with us here, a seasoned pulmonary physician asked Mrs. Betty how she was doing. "As compared to what," was her quick reply. The doctor took off his glasses, smiled, and gave her a hug, explaining that he was moved by her wit and logical point of view that everything is relative. Bloom, she did; although ironically Mrs. Betty was very allergic to most ornamental flowers! Mrs. Kinney helped grow a successful family with her husband, the late R.T. Kinney, Jr. Easters, weddings, Thanksgivings, and Christmases held at her home in Monroe were highlights of her life: happy and fulfilling times. Those times were filled with joy and a nourishing spirit. Mrs. Betty worked very hard in the medical field early on in nursing, often taking late shifts to make ends meet. Once she (finally) decided to marry Mr. R.T., she began assisting him streamline his "bachelor style of bookkeeping," as she put it. From there, the two took on many projects as partners. Mrs. Betty owned the Discount Wallpaper Store which flourished for many years, even though it started off as a side project. This is yet another example that she bloomed without exception. While Mrs. Betty bloomed, she refused to remain stationary. She enjoyed travelling with Mr. R.T. to the Oregon coast especially, but had expert-level travel advice for anyone considering travel to Mexico, Europe, or Las Vegas. With Mr. R.T. serving as Potentate of the Barak Shrine Temple, Mrs. Betty was especially proud of the work the Shriners did for children, and her devotion to Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron. Countless hours of preparation, fundraising for the annual Circus, and travel to other areas were devoted to these noble causes. Mrs. Betty is preceded in death by her husband, R.T. Kinney, parents, Leon and Jewell Adams, brother, C.L. Adams, and grandson, Jason Obert. Mrs. Betty is survived by her daughter, Alice McKee; grandchildren Angela Abbott and husband George, Ian Kinney and wife Tasha, Amanda Jett and husband Dave, Kim McClure, Stephanie Kinney, and Benson T. Kinney; great-grandchildren Abby Abbott, Isabella Abbott, Leo Abbott, Roland Wayne Jett, Maddie Kinney, and Sam Kinney. Pallbearers will be Benson Kinney, Ian Kinney, George Abbott, Patrick Wiley, Michael Adams, and Glen McGowen. Honorary Pallbearers will be Past Potentates and Nobles of the Barak Shrine Temple. Visitation will be Saturday, April 25, 2015, from 5:00pm until 8:00pm at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shreveport Shriners' Hospital for Children.
