KIPER Funeral services for Ernest Asa Kiper, Jr., 76, of Wisner, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at First Baptist Church of Wisner, with the Rev. Thomas Peoples and the Rev. Kevin Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Oakley Cemetery in Wisner under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist. Mr. Kiper passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Franklin Medical Center following an extended illness. A devoted husband for 57 years, Mr. Kiper is survived by his wife, Mary Barfield Kiper of Wisner. He is also survived by his children: daughter-in- law, Lisa Kiper, of Winnsboro; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Tommy Kimbrough, of Winnsboro; son and daughter-in-law, Myles and DeAnne Kiper, of Wisner; and daughter and son-in-law, Cristi and Joey Naff, of Ruston; grandchildren Shelby James, Kelly Longoria, Clay and Carley Kiper, Anna and Sara Naff; great-grandchildren Kainley and Uriah James; brother-in-law Dr. Leonard Ponder of College Station, Texas; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his son Trey Kiper, grandson Eddy Kiper, parents Ernest Asa and Sue Evans Kiper, and sister Sue Ann Ponder. Ernest Kiper was a longtime pillar of the Wisner community, working with his father, and eventually his children, in the family business - - Kiper Hardware and Lumber Corp. He began working in the store as a youth, joining the business full time after graduating from LSU in 1962, where he completed his degree in three years. He owned and operated the hardware store for decades before retiring. He served his community in many ways - as mayor of the Town of Wisner, as a founding member of the board of Franklin Academy, through active service in the Lions Club and on a number of boards related to his business interest. Ernest Kiper was a beloved member of First Baptist Church of Wisner, where he was a faithful tenor in the choir for years, in addition to serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and a member of many committees. He was also a member of the Old South Regional Car Club, and enjoyed displaying his antique cars at area festivals. He exhibited great talent and meticulous attention to detail in restoring old cars, and he even maintained and repaired the fleet of gravel trucks he owned. A soft-spoken man with a great sense of humor, Ernest Kiper was respected by all who knew him as a loving family man, a person of integrity and deep faith. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Serving as pallbearers will be Marc McCarty, Ken Batey, Jay Barfield, Guy Barfield, Jimmy Watson, Danny Richardson and Charles "Bubba" Higgins. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church of Wisner and Bo Ferrington.
