USMC Funeral services for 1st Sgt William Schumann "Bill" Laws, retired USMC, of West Monroe, LA will be held Monday, January 16, 2012 at Saint Matthews Catholic Church in Monroe at 10:00 a.m., with Father Joe Puthuppally and Father Lijo Thomas celebrating mass. Interment with full military honors will follow at Hasley Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home. Visitation will be Sunday, January 15, 2012, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe with rosary being at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Laws was born in Goose Creek, Texas on July 28, 1937. He died peacefully in his home on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012 with his wife and children at his side. Bill was a proud Marine and was a much-decorated Vietnam veteran with his service spanning 20 years. His many honors include the Bronze Star Medal with "V", Combat action Ribbon, Presidential Citation, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal with Silver Star, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Five Stars, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation with Palm, and Vietnam Campaign with Device, as well as Expert Marksman. After Mr. Laws retired from the military, he and his beloved family moved to West Monroe where he was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the West Monroe Jaycees. Mr. Laws was also retired from Stuart Irby Co. He was preceded in death by his parents Eulalie Schumann and Charles F. Laws Jr. of New Orleans, LA, brothers Fred Allen, John B., Charles F. III and Thomas (Tiny) Laws and a sister Ann Laws Dubos. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Carolyn Jowers Laws, daughters Lydia Walker and her husband Dale, Lauren Johnson and her husband Gary, and Leslie Fox and her husband Danny. Grandchildren Jared, Whitney, and Mollie Walker, Jessica, Christopher, Joshua and Miranda Johnson, Mathew and Lucas Fox, Great grandchildren David, Daniel, Katy and Trinity. Surviving brothers and their spouses: Richard (Dick) Laws, Peter and Delia Laws, Joseph and Mollie Laws. Sisters: Mary Angelita Laws OSF, Mary Louise Laws, Monica Marie Laws OSF, sister-in-law Mary Ruth Funk, Dorothy C. Laws, Pat Jowers Joiner and her husband Buddy and brother-in-law Doug and Rutheen Jowers. Numerous Nieces, nephews and cousins. Military Rites provided by the Marine Corps Reserve of Shreveport. Serving as pallbearers will be his brothers Dick, Peter and Joseph Laws as well as friends Dennis Bratton and Eddie Bryan. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Matthews Community Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or charity of your choice.
