Funeral services for Leslie Abrams Leibowitz, 87, of Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, June 6, 2010 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Rabbi Marshall Klaven officiating. Private family graveside services will follow at the Jewish Cemetery. Mrs. Leibowitz was born in 1923 and passed away Thursday, June 3, 2010 at home surrounded by her loved ones. She will be remembered, as the co-founder with her husband, of the first fabric specialty shop that originated in the Ark-La- Miss area in January of 1948, and which was known as the Famous Fabric Shops of Monroe until she retired in 1985. She also helped operate fabric shops in Bastrop, Ruston, and West Monroe, LA. She counted her many customers among her many dear friends. She was a member of the Congregation B'nai Israel in Monroe, LA since 1927 and also belonged to its Sisterhood. Additionally, she was a member of the Lotus Club and was also active in helping various service organizations over the years she lived in Monroe. Leslie will be remembered for her very kind heart, unselfish manner, good humor, and unaffected ways. She had friends everywhere she went and loved to be on the go. Her love of entertaining and many friendships were her trademarks in her full life. To know her was to love her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Molly and Jacob Abrams; husband, Irving S. Leibowitz; daughters, Linda and Claire Leibowitz; and son, Phillip Leibowitz. Survivors include her son, Richard Leibowitz and wife Ruth of Baton Rouge, LA; sister, Florence Waldman of Kilgore, TX; niece, Carol Waldman of Dallas, TX; nephew, Dr. Mark Waldman of Dallas, TX; and longtime caregiver and friend, Mary Hall. Pallbearers will be Jimmie Laudenheimer, Donnie Laudenheimer, Jay Marx, Mel Cohen, Paul Spillers, Don Marcus, Ansel Smith, Charles Masur, Sack Marx, and Maurice Raphael. Visitation will be 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Congregation B'nai Israel Endowment Fund or the Ouachita Council on Aging Meals on Wheels Program.
