Jeb Stuart "Jake" Lord, Jr., was born on the family farm near Pelican, Louisiana on September 27, 1926 and passed from this life on June 10, 2016. He and his six siblings learned farm work while attending nearby Pelican School. He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School in 1943 and joined the Marines that fall when he was 17. After boot camp, he was assigned to the 7th Marine Regiment for the landings at Peleliu on September 15, 1944. He was wounded on Peleliu and spent his 18th birthday onboard a hospital ship. Healed up in time for Okinawa, he was promoted to Corporal and led his own squad in that campaign. Lacking sufficient points to return home at war's end, he was sent with the 1st Marine Division for occupation duties in China. Jake was awarded the Purple Heart, Pacific Campaign with 2 Battle Stars, China Occupation, and World War II Victory Medals, along with the Marine Combat Ribbon. Returning home, Jake married his high school sweetheart, Betty McCullough, on Easter Sunday, 1946. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, Jake enrolled at Louisiana Tech that fall in the Forestry Department. After graduation, he worked in Arkansas for the Dierks Company until 1966. At that time, he was hired by Manville to work in the forestry office in West Monroe until retirement in 1993. Jake once said that he enjoyed every day of his work as a forester. A deacon in the Southern Baptist Church for over 60 years, he also served in church music in several churches as a song leader, choir director, and as a member of a gospel quartet, The Watchmen. Jake was a faithful member of the New Chapel Hill Baptist Church for the past 50 years. His gentle spirit and heart of Christian love impacted the lives of many people.
