Mae S. Mackey of West Monroe, age 77, passed into eternal life on June 5th, 2015, after a long battle with cancer. Mae grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas. After marrying her high school sweetheart, Jim, in 1956, Mae moved to Louisiana. She received both a bachelor's and a master's degree of education from Louisiana State University. Mae began her career as a high school business teacher in 1969. She taught at the Louisiana State University Lab School in Baton Rouge for over 20 years before her retirement in 1996. She was loved by all her students and fellow faculty members. Mae was a true Southern Lady. She was constantly serving and entertaining in her home in Baton Rouge and continued that legacy once she moved to West Monroe. Mae is remembered for her love of tea parties, holiday festivities, and travel. In their retirement, Mae and Jim traveled to Europe, Canada, South America, and Hawaii. Church life was very important to Mae. She was active at University Baptist Church in Baton Rouge for 33 years and then at First Baptist Church of West Monroe for the last 9 years. Bible study was one of her passions. She was involved in Bible Study Fellowship in Baton Rouge and in West Monroe. Since moving to West Monroe, Mae was also involved in the Grace Place Ministry, Heart to Home, and was an active member of the Dioko Life Group at First Baptist Church of West Monroe. Mae loved being a grandmother to her three grandsons. She would never tire of playing with them, reading to them, and listening to them. Michael, Joseph, and James will always have a special place in their hearts for their Nana. Mae was predeceased by her parents, James Patrick Stephens and Nettie Mae McClendon Stephens Morris James. She leaves behind her husband of 59 years, James Adair Mackey; her daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Steve McMahan; her three grandsons Michael, Joseph, and James McMahan all of West Monroe, Louisiana; her sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Ed Morrison of Fayetteville, Arkansas; her nephew and his wife, Tray and Sue Morrison of Fayetteville, Arkansas; her nephew and his wife, John and Trina Morrison of Bartlett, Tennessee, and 5 great nieces. The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Barron, the nurses and staff at Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care, and Always Best Care for the outstanding care Mae received.
