Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Funeral services for Mr. George Nelson Maddux, Jr., 84, of Middleburg, FL formerly of Monroe, LA, will be at 2:00 PM Friday, August 15, 2008, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Mr. Maddux's nephew, the Rev. John Albright, officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Maddux passed away Monday, August 11, 2008, after a brief illness. Born December 16, 1923 in Helena, AR to George N. Maddux and Julia Bates Stewart Maddux, he joined the Army after high school graduation and proudly served his country during WWII. Mr. Maddux was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic actions in the Battle for Peleliu Island on 26-27 October 1944 when he and a companion advanced on and pushed back the enemy, saving the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. George retired from Monroe Air Center where he worked as the parts manager for Fleeman Aviation and Motor Supply. He and his wife moved to Florida to be close to their daughter and her family in October 2000. He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Shirley Brooks Maddux; daughter, Shirley Ann Lynch and son-in-law, Robert Lynch; granddaughter, Kimberley Hall and husband Dennis Hall; a sister, Nina Albright and brother-in- law, Charles Albright; several nieces and nephews; and many loving friends. Pallbearers will be Johnny Jones, Greg Hare, Mac McKenzie, Michael McMahan, Leonard Farrar, and John Shamblin. The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. and Friday from 12:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
