BASTROP, LA. Funeral services for James Pierce Madison will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Christ Episcopal Church of Bastrop with the Reverends Edward M. Head and James Benbrook officiating. Interment will follow at Christ Church Cemetery under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, June 2, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. at Cox Funeral Home, Bastrop. James Pierce Madison was born November 29, 1931 to the late James Madison and Jeanette Hamlin Pierce Madison. He died on Memorial Day May 31, 2010 at Lagniappe Health Care in Bastrop. Mr. Madison was a retired attorney and former member of the Madison, Garrett, Brandon, Hamaker, Wilson, & Tugwell Law Firm. A native of Bastrop, he attended Augusta Military Academy at Fort Defiance, Virginia and graduated from L.S.U. Law School. Before his retirement he was a member of the American Bar Association, Louisiana State Bar Association, and Fourth Judicial District Bar Association of which he was president in 1966. At the time of his death, he was an active communicant of Christ Episcopal Church which he served as Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Secretary, and Treasurer. Mr. Madison had served as Chairman of the Morehouse Parish Democratic Executive Committee, President of the Morehouse Parish Board of Election Supervisors, Morehouse Parish Library Board, Morehouse Industrial Foundation and Crisis Assistance Ministries. He was one of the co-founders of the Morehouse Parish United Fund, former director of Bastrop Federal Savings & Loan Association, Bastrop Chamber of Commerce, Bastrop National Bank, and City Director of Hibernia National Bank. He was currently active in the Morehouse Community Coalition, Morehouse Council on Aging, Morehouse Economic Development Corportation and Christ Episcopal Church. "Mister" served as an Infantryman with the U.S. Army in Korea. Mr. Madison will be remembered for his keen interest in people of all walks of life. A man of utmost integrity, scrupulous forthrightness and apparent seriousness, he had a scintillating wit. He was very tenacious with regard to any project he undertook and was courageous in that he did not vacillate as to his principals even if others should find them unpopular and disagreeable. He is survived by his wife, Helen Vining Madison of Bastrop, two brothers, John Y. Madison of Monroe, George F. Madison and wife, Gayle of Monroe, three nieces, Mary Frances Madison Carll, Sarah Pierce Madison Clement, and Susan Gayle Madison; four nephews, William Stewart Madison, James Madison, II, Jordan Yerger Madison, Stewart Hamlin Madison as well as several grand nieces and grand nephews. Serving as pallbearers are Steve Gillikin, Frank Messinger, Dr. Claude Pratt, Larry James, Mike Parker, and Karl Davis. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Douglas D. Keller, Jr., E.L. "Boots" Gladney, Goodwin Gladney, Kenneth Bernard, R.D. Defreese, Jr., Judge Merwin Brandon, Jack Files, and Jack Gaines. The family wishes to especially thank Dr. Carter Cox, Jr. and staff, nurses and staff at Lagniappe Health Care, nurses and staff of Premiere Hospice, and Joyce Martin for the loving care they gave to "Mister".
