Interment will be in Fountain Memorial Gardens. Reverend Michael J. Russo, Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Lectors will be Elaine Martin and Madeline Maragos. Mr. Madona's grandchildren will serve as giftbearers. Rachel Gaspard, Cantor, accompanied on the organ by, Andre Courville, will sing for the services, "Ave Maria", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", "Amazing Grace" and "I'll Never Walk Alone". Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Madge Simms Madona of Lafayette; three daughters, Debbie Boyles and her husband, Chuck of Lafayette, Margie Tallini and her husband, Denis of Thomaston, GA and Cheri Murphree and her husband, Glenn of Lafayette; one son, Mike Madona and his wife, Lisa of Lafayette; and seven grandchildren, Dr. Camille Elkins and her husband, Dr. Blake Elkins, Carmen Tallini, Becca Murphree, Ross Murphree, Brad Murphree, Gregory Murphree and Lauren Murphree. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Madona, Sr. and Josephine Galliano Madona; one brother, Charles Madona; and one sister, Elmira Theriot. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana and resident of Lafayette for most of his life, Mr. Madona was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who knew him. He was a member of the United States Army and proudly served his country during WWII in the 82nd Airborne Division where he was awarded two Purple Hearts for his service. "Coach" as many of his students and friends knew him, was a true "hero". His proudest moment in life came during his Honor Air Trip where he was chosen to place the wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was a football coach for over 40 years and retired from Northside High School in 1987. "Coach" was an avid sports fan and supported the ULL Ragin Cajuns and the LSU Fighting Tigers. He could often be seen at Red's Health and Racquet Club or doting over his grandchildren, whom he adored. "Coach" Madona will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Pallbearers will be Ross Murphree, Brad Murphree, Gregory Murphree, Mike Madona, Glenn Murphree, Chuck Boyles and Denis Tallini. A Rosary will be prayed on Friday, July 2, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church. The family requests that visitation be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church on Friday from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM and will continue on Saturday from 9:30 AM until time of services. The family would like to give special thanks to Milton Resweber and Dr. Kenneth McCarron for their kindness, care and compassion given to Mr. Madona during his time of need.
