She will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Gene was born on Sept. 5th, 1927 in Hattiesburg, MS to Eugene and Eunette Courtney. She was the Great Grand daughter of Robert Henry Edom for whom the Edom Bridge was named in Monroe, LA. She attended Ouachita Parish HS and graduated from Neville HS then earned a degree in Journalism at Louisiana Tech. After her father passed; the family moved from Monroe LA back to Hattiesburg MS and lived in the family's home at 303 Walnut Street. She married Curtis Ross McKinney, Sr. and became an Air Force wife. After a period of time, they divorced and Gene returned to Hattiesburg MS where she met and married Sidney Burns Majure from Newton, MS. The family moved to Philadelphia PA in 1963 and then on to Miami FL in 1969. Gene retired after a life long career as a Social Worker for Children and Family Services in Miami and became a world traveler. She was a true southern lady, an avid reader, did the crossword puzzles in pen, had a love for helping people, and instilled a respect and love for all people in her children. She had many cherished friendships and met new friends where ever she traveled in the world. Her vibrant spirit for life will sorely be missed. Her husbands, Sidney B. Majure, Esq. and Curtis R. McKinney Sr. preceded Gene in death. She is survived by her son, Dr. Curtis Ross McKinney Jr., her daughter, Diane Courtney McKinney, her sister, Stella Courtney Price and her brother, Edward K. Courtney and her beloved cat Pearl. The family will have a private service on Sunday, June 7th 2015 after which will be a celebration of her life at her home for family and friends.
