WALTER GAYLE MANGHAM, JR. Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA Funeral services for Rev. Walter Gayle Mangham, Jr., 79, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, June 27, 2009, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe with Rev. Connie Ward and Dr. Alan Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Walter was born in Monroe on November 29, 1930 to the union of Walter and Althea Mangham. He went home to be with the Lord on June 25, 2009 after a lengthy illness. He was a graduate of Neville High School; Baylor University, Waco, TX; and Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Philadelphia, PA. His vocal study was at North Texas State University, Denton, TX and Robert Grooters Vocal in Philadelphia. He was an instructor and Assistant Professor of Voice and Music at both Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary and Eastern College, St. David's, PA. Walter was ordained to the ministry by First Baptist Church, Monroe, and served as Minister of Music and Assistant Pastor for 35 years. He authored a book, "The Church That Would Not Die," on the history of First Baptist Church, Monroe. Walter was truly a man of God. He devoted his life to serving his Master and others. His family, friends, and associates will always remember him for his loving and gentle spirit. As a minister, Walter told what the bible teaches of God's love. As a musician, he sang songs based upon the bible and taught others to sing these songs. At the time of his death he was a member of Parkview Baptist Church. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nell Cheek Mangham; sister, Evelyn Ferringer; brother-in- law, John Cheek; and nephew, Randy Cheek. He is survived by his mother-in-law, Marie Cheek; Godchildren, Dawn Cheek and Blair Reeves; brothers-in-law, Jay Ferringer, and Bobby Cheek and wife Nita; sister-in-law, Carolyn Cheek; special cousin, Dot Hoyem and husband Don; nephews, Keith Cheek and wife Lisa, Kevin Cheek and wife Janelle, and Charles Ferringer and wife Mary; nieces, Peggy Reitzell and husband Steven, Debbie Albright and husband John, Shari Schuyler and husband Dwight, and Molly Cheek Gammill and husband Charles; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Pallbearers will be Keith Cheek, John Albright, Charles Trichel, Charlie Gammill, Marshall Jay Reitzell, and Stevan McCain Reitzell. The family will receive friends today, Saturday, June 27, from 10:00 AM until time of service at 2:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road. The family requests that memorials be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home. The family would also like to express sincere appreciation to the administration and staff of Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Rayville, LA for their tender care of our loved one.
