Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 3:00 PM at Covenant Presbyterian Church 1901 Milton Street with Reverend John Mabray officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. until service time at the church prior to the service. Interment will follow at Riverview cemetery under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes of Monroe. Joy is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Ben F. Marshall, III; daughters, Vee Marshall Hollis, Margaret Marshall Barr and her husband, Jess; son Ben Marshall, IV and his wife, Kathy all of Monroe; grandchildren, Marshall and his wife, Erin of Hoover, AL., Harper Hollis, Allie Hollis of Jackson Hole, WY., Emma Barr, Camille Barr, Haynes Barr of Monroe; and two great granddaughters. She is also survived by her sister; Billie H Jackson of Denver, CO; her sister-in-law, Marillyn M. T. Klam of Monroe, LA; and several nieces and nephews. Also mourning her passing is her special friend, Serena Dunn. Appropriately named, Joy, was the middle child of the union of Judge Will M. Harper and Vyvian Wallace Harper. They and a sister, Vyvian Harper Frazier preceded her in death. A proud alumna of Georgia Tucker, Neville High School, and Sophie Newcomb College, Joy frequently lead groups cheering for the Tigers and the Green Wave. Sharing her artistic skills with the community, many of her watercolors may be enjoyed in local offices, medical facilities and homes. She illustrated the Cotton Country Collection for the Junior League of Monroe and served in various capacities. The League presented her the Louise Seymour Award for her many years of volunteerism. Other groups dear to her heart were the Masur Museum of Art, The Franciscan House, Miss Louisiana Pageant Organization, Kappa Alpha Theta, Ronald McDonald House, and the N. E. LA Arts Council receiving the Mary Lea Milam Award. Under Governor David Treen's administration, she was a member of the Board of the LA Arts council and represented Monroe in Avignon, France when the "twinning" of the two cities occurred. Joy tirelessly lent her time and talents in flower arranging for many events, parties and weddings. The Monroe Garden Study League (member of the Garden Club of America) awarded her with the Dorothy Vietor Munger Award in 1999 in a GCA flower show. In 1998, she was awarded the Floral Design Certificate by the Monroe Garden Study League. Mentoring to many, Joy shared her knowledge and expertise to those yearning to develop the art of floral design. A faithful member and elder of Covenant Presbyterian Church, Joy could be seen most days there as a "Martha" or a "Mary" because of her devotion and loyalty to her church. A special thank you to Lori Isbell, St. Joseph's Nursing Home and First Choice Hospice for their love and compassionate care of Joy. Pallbearers will be Dan Barr, Haynes Barr, Will Frazier, Harper Hollis, Marshall Hollis, Dr. John McClendon and Dan Robertson. Honorary pallbearers will be elders of Covenant Presbyterian Church.
