"Nub" Martin will be held 2:00 PM Thursday, June 14, 2012 at the Chapel of Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop with the Reverends Joe Mercer and David Sistrunk officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery of Bastrop under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. W.L. Martin was born September 21, 1927 in Brookhaven, Mississippi to the late Jess Martin and Lamanda Brister Martin. He passed away Monday, June 11, 2012 at Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop, Louisiana. Mr Martin is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ruth C. Martin, his sister, Benita Martin Fleming, and two brothers, Orville Martin and Earl Martin. Mr. W.L. "Nub" Martin was a graduate of and all sports athlete at Oak Grove High School and he remained a loyal fan of all Oak Grove Tiger sports. W.L. went to work for International Paper Company in 1948 where he also played for the IPCo. baseball team. Mr. Martin began his career with the Bastrop Fire Department in November of 1963 retiring as a District Fire Chief on October 31, 1986. Mr. "Nub" enjoyed coaching boys and young men in baseball and he was the recepient of the "Bob Harp" Award for his contributions and service to youth athletics in Bastrop. Mr. Martin enjoyed bird hunting with his dogs and hand tying jigs for white perch fishing. He will affectionately be remembered for being a loving, caring, and understanding man. He will be missed by all who loved him. Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Katie Martin of Bastrop, his son, Albert Martin of Bastrop, a brother, G.W. "Dub" Martin and wife, Shirley Martin of Oak Grove, Louisiana, and a sister-in-law, Eldora Martin of Cabot, Arkansas. Serving as pallbearers are Johnny Lee Moreland, Bruce Jenkins, Olen Haynes, Danny Barmore, James "Buddy" Williams, and Ted Grimes. Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, June 13, 2012 beginning at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop.
