MARTIN Funeral services for Joyce T. Martin, 88, a teacher of Winnsboro will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, September 27, 2014 in the chapel of Gill First National Funeral Home with Rev. Harry Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in Myrtle Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:00 pm until time of service at the funeral home. Mrs. Martin was born December 22, 1925 in Harrisonburg to Joseph Mortimer and Sarah Estelle Kelly Trichel and passed from this life on September 25, 2014 at Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro. "Miss Joyce", as so many in this area came to know her, arrived in Winnsboro from her hometown of Harrisonburg, Louisiana one rainy afternoon ready to start her new job at the Franklin Sun newspaper. Seeking shelter from the rain, she hurried into the nearest door, which happened to be W.C. "Bill" Martin's ice cream shop. The budding journalist and the budding entrepreneur apparently saw much to be admired in each other and married in November of 1949. Two daughters, Carla and Suzy, followed by a son, Kelly, came along over the next few years and the Martin family settled into a fine house built by Joyce's father, Mortimer "Mort" Trichel, of Harrisonburg. Joyce saw to the needs of the children and managed home life while Bill and his brother Caleb worked to build the family business, Martin Brothers Ice Cream. Joyce and her five siblings all had college degrees and her children's education was a top priority. Carla and Kelly both attained college degrees but a tragic auto accident claimed Suzy's life early in her freshman year at what is now ULM. Having attained her teaching certificate through post graduate work, Joyce taught for ten years at Northeast Louisiana Vocational School in Winnsboro, helping many people to a better life by achieving their Graduate Equivalency Degree. Returning to home life, Joyce enjoyed reading, entertaining close friends, travel with Bill, some freelance journalism, attending First Baptist Church, her book club and her affiliation with the Oakley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Bill passed away in 1995 but Joyce's tenacious spirit carried her through the years until a stroke claimed her life at the age of 88. Carla and Kelly still make their homes in Winnsboro, both working in the family business. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William C. "Bill" Martin; daughter Suzy Martin; three sisters: Geraldine McHale, Audrey Gibson, and Kathryn Bond; two brothers: Shel Trichel and Dr. Burdette Trichel. Survivors include daughter Carla Martin and husband Doug Ogden; son Kelly Martin and wife Carrol all of Winnsboro; four grandchildren: Angela Evans, Bailey Martin and wife Magen, Sophie Martin Green and husband Vick and Noah Martin; 3 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. Pallbearers will be Conard Gaither, Steve Gibson, Jim Hooper, Bob McHale, Charlie Trichel and Paul Trichel.
