MASON Fort Necessity, LA Mulhearn Funeral Home Winnsboro, LA Funeral services for Cecil Mason with the Reverends Lillard Bevill, Rex Barker, and Howard Childs officiating will be on Wednesday, March 11 at 10:30 AM at Mulhearn's Funeral Home in Winnsboro, LA. Burial is in the historic Boeuf Prairie United Methodist Church cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Cecil Mason was a lifelong resident of Fort Necessity, LA; he died peacefully at his home on Monday, March 9 with his family and friends around him. Cecil was a humble man and a man of few words; when he spoke, everyone listened, for he had something to say. He enjoyed the outdoors and camping with his special friend Ricky Smith. In 1945, Cecil, eighteen years old, answered Uncle Sam's call by joining the Army Air Corps. After basic training, he was deployed to London, England where he contracted rheumatic fever and was quarantined for 9 months. His slow gait, which was a result of his heart condition, earned him the nickname of "Speedy" from his co-workers at the post office. In later years, the heart damage from the illness caused him to have to retire from the United States Postal Service after seventeen years of service. When he had to retire on a medical disability, he did not go home to rest; he immediately planned his garden which he shared with everyone in the community. He left fresh vegetables, watermelons and fresh peaches on the doorsteps of many people. His watermelon and peaches were the best in the community, and he took great pride in his produce. Preceding Cecil in death were his parents Heloise Volentine Mason and Robert B. Mason; two brothers John Stewart and Malcolm; a sister, Mildred Mason Goins. He is survived by his wife of forty-six years, Mary Jo Berry Mason; a daughter, Nona and her husband Daniel Mendez; one grandson Chris, who is a senior at Texas A&M; one brother, Kenneth Mason of Fort Necessity, LA; four nephews Ronnie and Gary Goins, Kenneth A. Mason and Malcolm Mike Mason and one niece, Mariann Hitt. Pallbearers are Jimbo Colvin, Ken A. Mason, Mike Bryan, Ricky Smith, Eddie Ray Bryan, and Jimmy Henderson. Honorary pallbearers are Charles Buie, Charles Winters, Joe Tarver, Faydette Moore, and Ray Bryan. The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Joyce and staff, Dr. Ronald Koepke and staff, Family Life Home Health, and TLC Hospice.
