A visitation time, with the family, for Lou Mathis, age 81, of Jacksonville, are scheduled from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Saturday June 5, 2010 at Autry Funeral Home Jacksonville. A Graveside service at West Monroe Luna Methodist Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date. Mr. Mathis passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at his home in Jacksonville. He was born on May 17, 1929 in West Monroe, LA to Eddie Nathanial and Maudie Lee Mathis. Mr. Mathis was a news man for the Houston Post and Chronicle. He served as a press aid for Sen. Ralph Yarbrough and was an information officer for the US Dept of Education. He retired in 1989 and lived in Tyler for four years before moving to Jacksonville. Lou was an avid golfer and Cherokee Country Club member for 20 years as well as a member of Liberty Hill Methodist Church in Tyler. Survivors include; wife, Mary Kathrene Mathis of Jacksonville, sons, Keith Edmond Mathis of Bossman, MT, Neil Stuart and wife Kathy of Bartlett, TN, Bonner Lee Mathis and wife Karla of Alexandria, VA and John Gordon Byerley of Phoenix, AZ, daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Hamilton of Stafford, VA, 3 grandsons, 2 granddaughters and 1 great grandson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
