MATTHEWS Rose-Neath Funeral Home Homer, LA James H. Matthews went to be with the Lord this morning, Saturday, June 5, 2010. He was a shining example of what had become known as the "greatest generation". The first child of Andrew Jackson Matthews, Jr. and Opal Wallace Matthews, he was born in the front bedroom of his grandfathers dogtrot house in Heflin, LA on February 12, 1923. He grew up on the family farm in northern Webster parish near Springhill. A true child of the great depression, his childhood was spent chopping and picking cotton and plowing behind a mule. In those days, everyone worked hard including the children. It was during this time that the values of hard work, honesty and doing the right thing were instilled in him and he never strayed from that. Mr. Matthews joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served honorably throughout WWII in both the North Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. I can't help but think that on this anniversary of D-Day, an old sailor is hitting the beach in Heaven, wading ashore to meet his Lord and Savior. After the war, he finished college at Louisiana Tech with a B.S. in Agriculture and went to work for the U.S.D.A. for 32 years. He married Gloria McPherson in 1951 and raised three children, Mike, Steve and Lisa. After losing Steve in 1990 and his wife Gloria in 1999, he lived alone in Homer with his dog "Bruno". His brother, Harry Matthews of Mouth of Wilson, VA, also survives him. He was a kind and thoughtful man and was well thought of by everyone who knew him, a true southern gentleman. Graveside funeral services will be held on Monday, June 7, 2010, at the Pilgrims Rest Cemetery in Shongaloo, LA with Rev. John McClelland officiating. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Homer on Sunday from 5:00P.M. until 7:00 P.M.
