GLORIA ANNE NOBLES MAY

Gloria Anne Nobles May died peacefully on January 1, 2014 surrounded by her 
family at her residence in Charlotte, North Carolina. Private inurnment will 
be at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church columbarium on Saturday, February 
15, 2014. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation 
following the inurnment in the church parlor from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A 
memorial service will follow the visitation with Rev. Dr. Tim Neustifter 
officiating.

Born on January 10, 1925 in Gibsland, LA, daughter of Emma and H.L. Nobles, 
she was reared in a strong Christian tradition. She attended Louisiana State 
University and graduated with a B.A (1945) and M.A (1947) in Romance Languages 
(French and Spanish). She became a resident of Monroe in 1952. After the death 
of her first husband, Dr. Roy L. Robertson in 1955, she returned to teaching. 
She taught French language at Neville High School and also pursued graduate 
studies in French at the Sorbonne, University of Paris (1960-1961). 
Subsequently, she served on the faculties of University of Louisiana - Monroe 
and Louisiana Tech University.

She married Jack O. May in 1961 and resided in Monroe, Baton Rouge, New 
Orleans and Ruston before returning to Monroe in 1972. She was a member of St 
Paul's United Methodist Church, Delta Zeta sorority, the Monroe Junior League, 
PEO, the Monroe Symphony League and various professional organizations. 

All of her life she entertained a great love of music, language and learning 
and highly valued her relationships with her students, colleagues and friends. 
She loved life and laughter and strived to be a person of integrity and 
compassion. She was dearly loved by her children and constantly inspired them 
with her great gift of knowledge, quick wit, conversational abilities and 
elegance. She was devoted to reading and was intensely intellectually curious. 
She cherished her pets and love of nature. She remained devoted to her family 
and prideful of her dear Louisiana heritage. This left an indelible impression 
on all in her family.

She was preceded in death by her sister and brother, Virginia Nobles and Joe 
H. Nobles, and her husband, Jack O. May. She is survived by her two daughters, 
Jennie Robertson of Charlotte, NC and Anne May Erwin of Baton Rouge, LA, and 
one son, Dr. Cary N. Robertson and his wife, Kim, of Chapel Hill, NC and her 
six grandchildren: Megan May Erwin, Catherine Corinne Robertson, Susan 
Elizabeth Robertson, Matthew Cary Robertson, Kristina Nicole Robertson, and 
Cassandra Kathryn Robertson. She is additionally survived by her sister-in-
law, Mrs. Joe H. Nobles and her nephew, Mark H. Nobles of Dallas, Tx and 
sisters-in-law Mrs. L. J. McStravick of Monroe and Mrs. Doug Jenkins of 
Ruston, La.

Memorials and charitable donations may be made to St. Paul's United Methodist 
Church, the Monroe Symphony, the Council of the Development of French in 
Louisiana (CODOFIL) or the charity of your choice .
