Private inurnment will be at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church columbarium. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend visitation following the inurnment in the church parlor on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. A memorial service will follow the visitation with the Rev. J. Roddy Taylor and Rev. Susan Ferguson officiating. Mr. May was born in Gurdon, AR on June 20, 1913 to Frank and Phonnie May. His family moved to Monroe in 1918, where he has resided continuously with two short interruptions. After graduating from Monroe City High School in 1931, he became employed in the local wholesale paper industry which had been his career. During WWII, he served in the North African and Italian theatres with the U.S. Air Force. Upon returning to civilian life he became involved in several civic and professional activities, including President of the Southern Paper Trade Association, President of the Monroe Rotary Club, Governor of Rotary District 619, President of the Board of the Monroe Symphony Orchestra and Chairman of the Board of the Ouachita Council for the Aging. Survivors include his wife Gloria Nobles May; daughter, Anne and son-in-law Dr. William Erwin of Baton Rouge, LA; stepdaughter, Jennie Robertson of Charlotte, NC; stepson, Dr. Cary Robertson and daughter-in-law Kim of Chapel Hill, NC; three sisters, Mrs. Grayson Guthrie and Mrs. Leo McStravick of Monroe, LA and Mrs. Douglas Jenkins of Ruston, LA; grandchildren, Megan May Erwin, Cassie, Susie and Matt Robertson and Kristina and Cassie Robertson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was extremely devoted to his family from whom he gained his greatest pleasure and satisfaction. A life-long Methodist, he was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Charitable donations may be made to St. Paul's, the Monroe Symphony Orchestra, or the charity of your choice. The family would like to express its loving gratitude to his devoted caretakers, Ms. Bobbye McFarland, Mrs. Lillie Boyd, Ms. Celeste Elliott, and Ms. Mary Young, in addition to his wonderful hospice nurse, Mrs. Angela Short.
