Miller Funeral Home Monroe, LA Services for Floyd McCarty Jr., age 68, of Monroe, LA will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, February 6, 2009 at the chapel of Miller's Funeral Home, Monroe, LA. Military service and interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Grayson, LA. Mr. McCarty was born March 24, 1940 in Grayson, LA. He went to be with his Lord Monday, February 2, 2009. Floyd was a Korean War veteran and served in the U.S. Army before transferring to the U.S. Air Force. He was honorably discharged in July 1968. His commendations include expert (carbine), marksman (M14 rifle), driver and mechanic badge, sharpshooter with bar, and good conduct medal. After the military he returned to Grambling State University and completed requirements for a degree in industrial arts education. He earned several credits toward a master's degree in special education at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. A retired educator, he taught woodworking, drafting and auto mechanics for many years at Neville High School in Monroe. He also taught at Louisiana Technical College in Ruston and at the Shelter Workshop in Monroe. Floyd is well-known in the Ark-La-Miss, the Ark-La-Tex and beyond for his love of model aviation and auto racing. He was a founding member of the Flying Tigers Aviation Club, which flies from its field in West Monroe, and the Back of the Bend Flying Club in Monroe. In 2007 the Back of the Bend Flying Club honored him for his dedication to model aviation with a plane that contained the member's name and in September the club sponsored its first annual Floyd McCarty Fly-in. Club members presented him with the Pilot's Choice Award. Preceding him in death are his father, Floyd McCarty, Sr., and niece, LaToya Frazier-Jackson. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of more than 31 years, Eleanor Rushing McCarty; his mother, Mildred Hodge McCarty; 4 children, Marvin, Angela, Jared and Gavin McCarty, his beloved granddaughter Kai Juliet; brother, Curtis (Audry); his sister, Edrene (John); his dearest friends Harold "Donnie" Beatch (Pat) and Thurmon McDowell (Bertha); and host of other friends and relatives. Visitation will be held Thursday, February 5, 2009 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Miller Funeral Home.
