Wednesday, August 27, 2008 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe with Rev. Frank Coens officiating. Burial will follow at Twin Cities Memorial Garden Cemetery. Mr. McClure was born November 8, 1925 in Electra, TX and passed away on August 24, 2008. He attended Kilgore Jr. College and Texas A&M before graduating from Southeastern Louisiana College in Hammond, LA. He began his coaching career at Ponchatoula High School in Ponchatoula, LA in 1949. In 1953, he moved to West Monroe with his wife, Rita to begin his coaching career in the twin cities. He coached at West Monroe High School from its opening in 1953 to 1964. He then coached at St. Frederick High School in Monroe, LA from 1964-1975. He coached at Ridgedale Academy in West Monroe, LA from 1975-1980. He returned to West Monroe High in 1980 until his retirement. He was actively involved in the West Monroe Dixie Youth Baseball Program. He was a life long member of the West Monroe Kiwanis Club and formed and sponsored the first Key Clubs at West Monroe High School, St. Fredericks High School and Ridgedale Academy. He is best known for starting the Donkey Basketball Tournament at West Monroe High School. He became known as "Donkey Dan". He was also a Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served in the United States Navy during WWII. He was actively involved in the community and loved his church and family. He was a coach, teacher, sponsor, mentor, and a friend to thousands. After retirement, he enjoyed the outdoors in Alaska, time at his camp and watching his grandsons play sports. He is preceded in death by his wife Rita Margaret, his daughter, Mary Kathryn, parents, Daniel Joseph and Louise, sister, Kathryn and brother Bob. He is survived by two daughters, Donna Marie and husband Courtney Morrison, and Debra Ann and husband Pete Zohimsky; three grandchildren, Christopher Daniel and wife Angel Freeland, Aaron Michael Weaver and Jeremy Shane Weaver and fiancée Jessica Riley; three great grandchildren, Kelsey Dickey, Haley Danielle Freeland and Shelby Riley. Pallbearers will be Ricky Weyand, Ronnie Huff, Chris Sasser, Lucky Cash, Jeff Muckelroy, and Larry Clark. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Tuesday and a memory sharing service starting at 6:00 P.M. Tuesday at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA.
