Officiating will be Dr. Michael Hawley, Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church and Rev. Larry Emory, Pastor of Longstraw Baptist Church, Choudrant, LA. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, 2500 West California Ave. in Ruston, under the direction of Owens Memorial Chapel. Mr. McGivney was born in Dossville, MS on September 5, 1932. He grew up working with family as they tended to their cotton gin, sawmill, corn and cotton fields, and livestock. Somehow he found time to participate in nearly every sport Kosciusko (MS) High School offered. He attended Holmes Junior College on a football scholarship before service in the U.S. Army as an M.P. during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return home, he and Jo Ann Waggoner began a marriage that lasted over 60 years. James was a 35-year employee of Charter Marketing Company where he was a District Supervisor. His career took the family to homes in Carthage and Greenwood, MS; Memphis, TN; and New Roads and Houma, LA prior to settling in Ruston where their four sons grew up. Choudrant became home after retirement, and James became renowned for his love of vegetable gardening. He deeply enjoyed the daily duties in the garden, but even more valued his quiet mission work--to share the fruit of his labor with family, friends, and those in need. A lifelong lover of sports and the outdoors, James especially enjoyed time spent hunting and fishing with family and friends. Emmanuel Baptist Church became a spiritual home for James and Jo Ann where they found peace and joy from an ever-growing faith in Christ. Church fellowship included a weekly "must do" for James as he played dominoes with a group of church men who "passed a good time" as they nurtured strong friendships. James' willingness to do for others and his talent for listening endeared him to many. He thoroughly loved his family and friends, especially his grand- daughter, Shelbey. His humility, good humor, and smile will be missed. Mr. McGivney is survived by his wife: Jo Ann Waggoner McGivney; three sons: Kenneth R. (Sharon), David W. (Freddie), and Kevin L.; six grandchildren: Shelbey McGivney, Marcela (Nathan) Carmichael, Patrick McGivney, Jordan (Matt) Cason, and Joseph Hamrick, and Meredith Hamrick; four great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Hedrick, and niece, Cindy Nations. Mr. McGivney was preceded in death by his parents: A. G. and Marie Doss McGivney; son: Gerry B. McGivney; and nephew: Mike Carroll. Servings as Pallbearers will be John Camp, Clyde Pesnell, Daniel Bailey, Wade Hampton, Jerry Baker, and Jessie Ard. Honorary pallbearers will be Emmanuel Baptist Church Domino Group, Billy McElduff and Tim Pesnell. The family expresses their appreciation to the staffs of St. Francis Medical Center and Premier Hospice for their kindness and care.
