Rolly Walker and Rev. Gary Willis officiating. A visitation will also be at Trinity Church following the service under the direction of Kilpatrick's Funeral Home. Rev. McGuire was born on July 23, 1921, to S.J. and Lois Lyons McGuire in Arcadia, Louisiana, and he died on February 21, 2015. He graduated from Louisiana Tech at the age of 19, in 1941 with a B.A. degree and from Duke University Divinity School in 1944, with a B.D. degree. While in North Carolina, studying at Duke, he met and married the love of his life, Mabel Elizabeth Bowling. From 1944 - 1946 he was a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy during WWII. In 1947 he received his S.T.M. degree from Boston University, and in 1971 he received his D.D. degree from Centenary College. Of all his higher-education experiences, those of his Louisiana Tech days remained the most treasured. During his college years at Tech, he pioneered Wesley Foundation work in 1937. Later, with the assistance of generous friends, an endowed professorship in English was founded in his and his wife's names. In 1993, he was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Arts and Sciences and in 1994 was one of the one hundred Centennial Distinguished Scholars for the University. He received Tech's highest award in 2002, when he was named the Alumnus of the Year. Throughout his life, Rev. McGuire supported Tech mentally, physically, and spiritually with broad participation and annual gifts for academics, athletics, and Methodist Campus Ministry. As a member of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, he served congregations of all sizes within the state. He organized the Downsville-Bethel-Mt Nebo Circuit (1947-1950) and founded Grace Methodist Church in Ruston (1950-1954). He served Park Avenue Church in Shreveport (1954-1958), First Church Mansfield (1958-1960), Trinity Methodist Church in Ruston (1960-1971), and Broadmoor Methodist Church in Baton Rouge (1973-1979). In addition to his church pastorates, he was the Baton Rouge District Superintendent (1971-1973), the Monroe District Superintendent (1979-1985), and interim Superintendent for the Ruston District (1988). He was an active member of the Kiwanis Club and the Ruston community, and Rev. McGuire represented Louisiana on the state, regional, national, and international levels of the United Methodist Church. He had been a member of the Board of Trustees of Centenary College since 1962 and was a charter member of the Board of Trustees of Glenwood Hospital (1961-1985). In 1985 he received the first annual Heritage Award, given to a native of his hometown, Arcadia, and Bienville Parish for leadership and service. He was well known during his retirement years as an entertainer with his partner Rev. Bob Peyton; the two performed an evangelism skit in multiple states over a 15 year period. He was privileged to be named the 2004 winner of the Lincoln Humanitarian Award, which honored his "humanitarian interests, unselfish giving, and service to others in their time of need." He also delighted in his title as an honorary Chieftain of the Oklahoma Choctaw Nation, for his support of Native American churches, and he was especially proud of earning his private pilot license at the age of 70. Rev. McGuire is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jack McGuire, his beloved wife of 62 years Mabel, and his daughter Betsy Teuton. He is survived by his daughter Sandra and her husband John Hebley, his son-in-law Hank Teuton, his daughter Vicki McGuire, his granddaughter Heidi and her husband Jason Stoddard, his grandson Bill Hengstenberg and his wife Stephanie, and four great-grandchildren -- Joshua Stoddard, MJ Hengstenberg, Jacob Stoddard, and Samantha Hengstenberg. Doug McGuire once said, "My primary earthly passions are my family, the Methodist Church, and Louisiana Tech." He dearly loved the people of Ruston, and his family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all the friends and acquaintances, church-family members, and healthcare professionals and caregivers who have been so lovingly attentive to him and Mabel. In the family's eyes, the entire sanctuary of Trinity will be a "family section" at the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Methodist Children's Home in Ruston, Trinity United Methodist Church, or Grace United Methodist Church.
