Charles Dupree officiating. Interment will follow at New Chapel Hill Church Cemetery. Harper was born February 21, 1935 in Pollock, LA. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana University after serving his country in the Marine Corps. In addition to NLU, Harper did post-graduate work at Mississippi College and Louisiana Tech, earning a masters degree and plus 30 in Education. As an educator, coach and high school administrator, Harper touched the lives of countless students, parents and teachers in Ouachita Parish. Harper began his teaching career at Crosley Elementary and taught at both West Monroe Junior and High School. As a coach, his greatest honor was achieving Louisiana Coach of the Year distinction as head basketball coach at West Monroe High School. His vision and leadership was recognized in the selection to the assistant principal role at Boley Jr. High School and principal positions at Calhoun High School and Ridgedale Academy in West Monroe. In addition to his professional achievements, he was known among his friends and family as an avid outdoorsman. His knowledge of the many lakes, rivers and bayous of North Louisiana made him a sought after resource for those looking for bass and crappie. Harper loved to garden and shared the fruits of his work with neighbors and church members. Harper faithfully attended New Chapel Hill Baptist in West Monroe. He served the church in numerous ways, including the Earl and Jane Williams Scholarship Fund, Personnel, Finance and Building Fund committees. He was also a proud member of the Adult 4 Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife, Leslie Pearson McKay; 3 children, Kevin McKay and his wife Laura of St. Louis, Kent McKay and his wife Jennifer of Bossier City, Jason Mitchell and his wife Amanda of Lake Charles; grandchildren, Matt McKay, Gracie McKay, Katie McKay, Hampton Mitchell and Hallie Mitchell; mother, Mrs. Laura Bigner; sisters, Flo King and husband Jim and Beth Thacker and husband Charles; brother, Charles McKay and wife Carol; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Jim Mitchell, Steve Adams, Robin LaForge, Dewey Wood, Scott Sills, Tim Martin, Roy Martin Anderson, and Steve Slocum. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Williams, Skinner Hindmon, Rat Townsend, Sam Herron, and Ken Pettit. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday with a tribute service at 7:00 PM at New Chapel Hill Baptist Church, West Monroe.
