MEADE Funeral Services for James W. Meade, 91, will be Saturday, April 29, at 1:00pm, Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe with Fr. Frank Coen officiating. Mr. Meade was born February 20, 1926, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, and passed aw away April 26, 2017, in Sterlington, Louisiana, surrounded by his family. At the age of 17, James enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 66th Infantry Division. On the night of December 24, 1944, he was aboard the S.S. Leopoldville, en route to Cherbourg, France, and the Battle of the Bulge, when th the ship was ripped apart by a German torpedo. He jumped into icy waters of the En English Channel and was rescued by a small boat from Cherbourg. He thereafter pa participated in the Battle of the Bulge and stayed over until 1946 in the Oc Occupation Army in Germany. Upon returning home, he earned degrees from the University of Wisconsin and St. Louis University, then began a career in Hospital Administration. He didn't care for cold weather, and jokingly said that with each job he took, he moved further south, until he ran into the Gulf of Mexico in New Orleans. As Deputy Director for the Louisiana Department of a Health, and Director of Operations for Charity Hospital/ New Orleans, he worked diligently to provide quality healthcare to all citizens of the state, including the underprivileged. In recognition of his efforts, he was appointed an Honorary Colonel, State of Louisiana Militia by Governor Treen. Upon retirement, he moved to West Monroe to be closer to his children. He was a loyal parishioner of St. Paschal's Chur Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a volunteer for the the Meals on Wheels program. James was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph J. and Marie Meade, his br brother, Donald J. Meade, and a niece, Patricia Arenas. Left to cherish his memory are sons Ted Meade and his wife, Christine, Bill Meade and his wife Cheryl, and J.J. Meade; and daughters Mimi LaFleur, Paula Thaggard Thaggard and husband David; Beki Etheridge and husband Robert, Patricia Owen and husband Bill; grandchildren Joe Meade, Michal Hale and husband James, Maggie Meade, Molly Meade, Jake Meade, Sydney DeVille, Jacob DeVille, Nick Lafleur Lafleur and wife Larissa, Chelsea Roberts and husband Jonny, David Thaggard Jr. and wife Caitie, Jo Marie Thaggard, Jennifer Thaggard and wife Kacie, Jason Thaggard Thaggard, LaDonna Castiglione and husband Corrado, Trey Woods and wife Angelica, Amanda Schroeder and husband Gary, Colton and Jamey Etheridge, Kristian Borden and husband Ned, and Josh Meade; great-grandchildren Noah Meade, Judah Meade, Logan Lafleur, Henry Thaggard, Jonah Thaggard, Rachel Garner, Ayden, Kayson, and Brynleigh Schroeder, Hollis, Hannah, and Harlan Borden, Shayla, Kira, and Zarah Woods, Elizabeth and Emily Hill; nieces Kathy He Hebert and husband Ed, Sue Meade; nephews Mike Meade and Andy Meade, and a host of of other relatives and friends. Visitation will precede the funeral at 12:00, followed by Burial at St. Paschal's Paschal's Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pall bearers, and Military honors will b will be accorded.
