Burial services will be held at the B'Nai Israel Cemetery, Monroe, LA, on Friday, October 2, 2009 at 10:00 am with Rabbi Foster E. Kawaler officiating under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home West Monroe, LA. Rene was born September 22, 1929 in Cologne, Germany to Albert and Helene Merker. They soon moved to France and then New York City. He grew up there and met his soon to be wife Jacqueline Merker. They later moved to Ruston and lived there for almost 40 years. Although he retired from teaching foreign languages at Grambling State University after almost 40 years, he continued to actively seek knowledge. He was remained active by studying a new language, Italian. In addition, he was recently honored by Grambling State University for his dedication to teaching in 2008. Rene also enjoyed traveling to see his friends here in Ruston as well as his brother in Florida. He loved to visit new places and learn about different cultures, too. Rene will be most remembered for his dedication to his son and fighting his illness, Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He made a point of speaking each year to help raise money for research during the Jerry Lewis telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Rene is survived by his daugher Sheryl Nelson and husband Eric Nelson, grandchildren, Hayley, Tyler, and Luke, of San Diego, California; his brother and his wife, George and Rita Merker of Florida; and his sister Anita Liskin of New Jersey. Rene was preceded in death by his son, Timothy Merker, and his wife, Jacqueline Merker.
