Hugh's 85 years started on a farm in upstate New York in 1929. The U.S. Air Corps led him to Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in 1947, where he met Dorothy Nell Pittman, whom he married three months later. He served in various capacities in the Armed Forces until 1962, raising four daughters along the way--Deborah Gail, Jackqueline Sue, Terry Ann, and Melody Jane. In 1969, Hugh moved to West Monroe, Louisiana, where he operated a furniture store, served as an elder at the Whites Ferry Road Church of Christ for 16 years and as director of the Adventures in Christian Living training program until 1986. He dedicated the next decade of his career to the ministry, first at the Colonial Heights church in Colonial Heights, VA, and later at the Coquitlam church in Port Coquitlam, British Colombia. In 1998 Monrovia Church of Christ in Madison, Alabama employed Hugh as church administrator, a role he filled until his retirement in May 2008. Hugh and Dorothy's four daughters led to ten grandchildren and then to fifteen great-grandchildren and counting. It also led to the name his family knows him by: Papa. Papa had no greater source of pride than his family and we all knew it. None of us ever left an encounter with Papa without being reminded of one thing: "I love you." Everyone who ever talked with Papa for more than five minutes heard about our latest achievements. Anyone who was in his vicinity was sure to be introduced to us. His greatest joy was having us all together. Surviving Hugh's passing are brother Robert, wife Dorothy of 66 years, and all of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each of us blessed by his many years of love, friendship, encouragement, and wisdom. His legacy to us and to all the many lives he touched through the years is encouraging love. As a matter of principle, Hugh didn't say goodbye--rather "See you later." Papa, we look forward to that time. The memorial service for Hugh will be Saturday, May 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Monrovia Church of Christ, 595 Nance Road, Madison, AL 35757. Memorial donations may be submitted to the Missions Fund at the Monrovia Church of Christ.
