MONTGOMERY Funeral services for Aylmer Eugene Montgomery, Jr., a retired insurance executive, will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, 2:00PM at First United Methodist Church in Monroe. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Monroe under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home. Mr. Montgomery passed away on February 4, 2017 in Monroe. He is survived by his wife, Clara Munholland Montgomery; and his children, Aylmer Eugene Montgomery, III and his wife, Vada Cann Montgomery, Olive Montgomery Hester and her husband, Stephen Keith Hester, Elizabeth Montgomery Row and her husband Alan Dockery Row, and Mary Laurens Montgomery Seely. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Arabella Montgomery Moore and her husband, James Walter Moore, III, Thomas Langford Hester and his wife, Callie Baker Hester, Clara Elizabeth Hester, John Henry Truett, III, Frances Elizabeth Montgomery Truett, James Munholland Montgomery Truett, Elliot Rutledge Row, Stuart Roberds Row, Rebecca Elizabeth Row, Charles Zimmerman Seely and Eliza Grayson Seely; his great-grandchildren, James Walter Moore, IV and Vada Speed Moore; his nephews, Shepard Girault Montgomery and Joe King Montgomery; and his niece, Julie Anne Montgomery. Mr. Montgomery was predeceased by his parents, Frances Noel Montgomery and Aylmer Eugene Montgomery, Sr.; his brother, Joe Creath Montgomery; and his sister-in-law Bernice Girault Montgomery. A life-long resident of Monroe, Mr. Montgomery grew up in the Phillips Bayou neighborhood along Island Drive, which was nothing short of a boy's paradise. He treasured the multi-generational friendships that grew from his childhood. His parents also fostered in him a love of horticulture, which he enjoyed throughout his life. He was introduced to politics by his father and remained a student of Louisiana politics until his death. Mr. Montgomery graduated from The Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee in 1946. He then earned his undergraduate business degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, where he was a member of the ROTC program and Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. While at Tulane, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After being honorably discharged as a Captain from the Marine Corps, he returned to Tulane and completed his law degree, graduating in 1954 with a L.L.B. Following his graduation from law school, Mr. Montgomery practiced law as an associate under the tutelage of C. McVae Oliver in Monroe. In 1955, he married Clara Guthrie Munholland, and was blessed with 62 years of steadfast love and friendship. Mr. Montgomery joined his family's insurance business, Montgomery Insurance Agency, Inc., shortly after his marriage, eventually becoming President of the agency. In 1994, Montgomery Insurance Agency, Inc. merged with Troy and Nichols Insurance Agency, Inc. to form Troy & Montgomery Insurance. Later in 2005, Troy and Montgomery Insurance became part of Community Financial Insurance Center, L.L.C., one of the largest agencies in Louisiana. During these transitions, Mr. Montgomery remained active in the agencies and the insurance industry. Throughout his life, Mr. Montgomery was active in local and state civic activities. He served as a Ouachita Parish Police Juror for the then-Ward 10 of Ouachita Parish. He was also appointed to the Louisiana Insurance Rating Commission by former Governor Edwin W. Edwards for two terms. He served on the Administrative Board of First Methodist Church of Monroe and on the Board of Directors of Monroe Educational Foundation, River Oaks School. He was a member of the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of Louisiana, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the Rotary Club of Monroe and the American Legion. Pallbearers will be James Walter Moore, III, Thomas Langford Hester, John Henry Truett, III, James Munholland Montgomery Truett, Charles Zimmerman Seely, Shepard Girault Montgomery, Joe King Montgomery, D. Ryan Sartor, III, Dr. Walter M. Sartor, and William Scott Guinn. Visitation will be at the First United Methodist Church in Monroe from 12:00PM to 2:00PM preceding the funeral service. Despite his lengthy illness toward the end of his life, Mr. Montgomery fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith. During this time, the determined way he lived his life and his love and unwavering devotion shown to his family, especially to his beloved Clara, were the greatest gifts he could have ever given to his family. His was a life well lived. The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to his caregivers over the last 11 years.
