MORISON Kilpatrick Funeral Home Monroe, LA A Memorial Celebration for Colonel Joseph S. Morison, U.S. Air Force, Retired, 77, of Monroe, Louisiana will be at 10:00 AM Friday, September 5, 2008 in the Chapel of Kilpatrick Funeral Home, Monroe, with Dr. Allison Moody officiating. Visitation will follow at the funeral home. Private graveside services will be at the cemetery. Colonel Morison passed away at Saint Francis Medical Center Saturday, August 30th surrounded by his loving family and following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Asheville, NC, Colonel Morison moved with his parents to West Palm Beach, FL in 1946 and graduated from Palm Beach High School in 1949. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1953 with a degree in Civil Engineering and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. He received a Master's Degree from George Washington University in 1965. After completing flying school, Colonel Morison participated in advanced flying training in F-86s. He met his wife Margaret while stationed at Greenville AFB, MS, after which they served as a team in many assignments all over the world making 23 moves in a 26 year career. As a junior officer he served as flying training advisor for the Royal Saudi Air Force, as a Major he became a Command Pilot and flew 121 missions in Vietnam as an F-4 fighter pilot. As a Senior Officer he served as Commander of the 96th Bombardment Wing at Dyess AFB, TX. During his career Colonel Morison earned two Legions of Merit, The Distinguished Flying Cross, numerous Air Medals and Air Force Commendation Medal. Upon his Air Force retirement, he and Margaret moved to Monroe where he accepted a job as Physical Plant Director at then NLU. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marie and Smith Morison. He is survived by Margaret, his loving wife of 52 years, his daughter Sue Morison of Monroe, his daughter Sherri Morison Hanks and husband Col Tom Hanks (USMC, ret) of Huntsville, AL, his special niece and nephew Leesa and David McMillin of Monroe, numerous nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews. Especially treasured are his two great nephews Brady and Cody McMillin, who were like grandchildren to him. Uncle Joe was Cody's hero. He leaves a beloved sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Jimmy Carver of Leland, MS, and an Aunt Rachel Ambler of Richmond, VA. Special in his heart were his three grand dogs Emma, Callie and Georgia. He leaves many friends. Special to him were his Tuesday Romeo lunch group, his former golfing buddies, his loving friend Georgia Street, who was always there for him and his family with her support and many prayers, and his MAC coffee group, which consisted of his many adopted nieces. He would want us to thank J. C. Cunningham, Ken Jackson, and Wyche Ashcraft, who gave him unending support during his illness. Our special thanks to Dr. Ran Phillips, his physician and friend. We'd also like to thank all of the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for him in his last years.
