He died Monday morning December 8, 2008, at St. Francis North Hospital in Monroe. He had been a patient of the NELA War Veterans Home for the past 21 months. The family will have a private interment Thursday morning. A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 11, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Allison Moody officiating. Howard was reared in north Mississippi at West Point and Goodman. He attended Holmes, Jr. College, in Goodman and was active in the band. He was a clarinet player who won the high school competition playing "Carnival of Venice" in Jackson. He played TAPS each night for the students at Holmes. Upon graduation from Holmes, Howard attended Mississippi College, and was a member of the Mississippi National Guard. He was called into active duty in 1940. The group was sent to Florida to help train other recruits. After Pearl Harbor, he was retained on active duty as a member on 31st Dixie Division. Howard saw service in the South Pacific in New Guinea, Morotal, Minanao, and the Philippines. The band guarded headquarters when under fire and he was discharged in December 1945. Howard re-entered Mississippi College and received his BA Degree. Upon graduation, he taught music at Holmes for several years. He earned his Masters at Ole Miss and did work on his Doctorate. Prior to leaving for active military duty, Howard married Evelyn Stafford, who attended Holmes. Upon returning, the Mortons had two daughters. He moved with his family to Monroe in 1952 and taught at ULM in the College of Business for over 30 years. In Monroe, Howard was active in the First Presbyterian Church, teaching Sunday school and serving as Deacon and Elder. He was also active for fifty years with the Downtown Monroe Lions Club, serving as President 1969-70. Through the years, Mr. Morton was supportive as a patron of the Strauss Little Theatre and the Monroe Symphony. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. His parents, Virgie and Mardis Morton, predeceased him, as well as a son-in- law, Henry H. Hinkle. He is survived by his two daughters, Lucille Morton Hinkle Smith and husband Arthur, and Christy Louise Morton Stone and husband Jimmy; and their children, Dr. Henry H. Hinkle, III and wife Amie and children, Caroline, Sarah Kate, and Henry H. Hinkle, IV. His granddaughter, Shelby Stone Mott, and son, Emmit Mott, and James J. Walter Stone also survived him. After the death of his spouse, Howard was married in 1991 to Jibby Langford Fox Morton, who also survives him with sons, John S. Fox and wife Charlotte, and James L. Fox; and grandson, Sean Fox and wife, Tina. Memorials can be given to The First Presbyterian Church, Lions Eye Foundation, or the charity of choice.
