Mrs. Martin was known to her friends and family as Maggie. She was the eldest child of Mr. and Mrs. William Mason Simmonses' nine children and was born on December 3, 1889, making her 90 years old. She had given up her home in West Monroe about five years ago and had lived in the Guest House since. When she was a young woman she attended Hudson College where she prepared herself to teach. She also attended summer sessions at La. Tech and now Northwestern State College. She taught in the rural schools of Winn Parish a number of years ago. Just a few years ago her eldest son Bruce asked her what she wished for Christmas and she quickly told him she wanted a set of McGuffey Readers. Since he travels to large hospitals all over the southeastern U. S. as an anethesiologist he was able to find her two of the set which she enjoyed a good many months prior to her death. This was the main books she taught. She married John T. Martin who preceded her in death as did her second Charles Mason Martin. Survivors include four sons, Doyle Bruce Martin of Nashville, Tennessee, Douglas Martin, Connie Martin, and Huey Martin, all of West Monroe; 13 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and three brothers, W. V. Simmons of West Monroe, Guy Simmons of Parkview Nursing Home in Winnfield, and K. C. Simmons of Dodson and a host of nieces and nephews. Her pall-bearers were her grandsons. The funeral was in Kilpatrick Funeral Home in West Monroe. Interment was in Roselawn Cemetery just out of Monroe on Tuesday, March 25, 1980.
