Interment will follow at 4:30 PM at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, MS under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. Hyland was born in Lake Providence in 1922, to the late Ollie Hyland Nelson and John Julius Nelson. He passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2014. Mr. Nelson was a retired business owner in Lake Providence, where he lived most of his life. He served in Lake Providence on the Board of Aldermen and the Lake Providence Port Commission. He enjoyed spending time with his family, loved telling stories about his childhood and military experiences, and watching football. He served in the Air Force as a bombardier navigator in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Mr. Nelson was also an active member of the American Legion. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven sisters, and three brothers. Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eleanor Keller Nelson; sons, Richard Nelson & wife Sherry, David Nelson & wife Jan, and Leo Nelson & wife Jan; daughters, Madeline Herring & husband Charles and Olivia Hawkins & husband Skip; grandchildren, Brandee Nelson, Melissa Newman & husband Jason, Hyland Herring & wife Jaime, Amanda McDuff & husband David, Megan Herring, Cori Traynham & husband Jeff, Anna Dickson & husband Michael, Katherine Nelson, Caroline Nelson, Kate Copes & husband Bruce, William Hawkins, Abi Nelson, and Emily Rogers & husband Billy; 7 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Grace VanDenburgh of Glenville, NY, sister-in-law Agnes M. Nelson of Vicksburg, MS, and numerous nephews and nieces.
