He died June 14, 2012 at the age of 72 of Alzheimer's. He was predeceased by his son, Richard, his parents, his sister and brother-in- law, William and Nelwyn Leonard of West Monroe, LA, his brother and first sister-in-law, Robert and Betty Sue Nolan and his nephew, Marty Nolan of Baton Rouge, LA. He is survived by his wife and best friend for 51 years, Betsy, his daughter and her husband, Pamela Dawn and Dr. Jeffry Watson and their children, Benjamin and Samuel of Nashville, TN and his daughter-in-law Laura Nolan and children, Lauren Alexandra and Mary Kathrine of Kingwood as well as extended family and many friends. He grew up in the small community of Cross Roads and went to a two room school until transferring to Farmerville in sixth grade. He graduated Farmerville High School in 1957. He graduated from Northeast Louisiana State College with a Bachelor of Science in Geology. He was an outstanding military graduate through the ROTC program and received a Reserve Army commission as a Second Lieutenant. He attended Artillery School at Fort Sill, OK. After his training at Ft. Sill he was offered a Regular Army commission which he accepted. He spent the next three years at Ft. Knox, KY where he became a First Lieutenant. His name was on the Captains list when he decided to resign his commission and return to graduate school at Northeast. He earned his Master of Science in Geology in 1967 and accepted a job offer with Texaco in Jackson, MS. After thirty eight years as an exploration geologist he retired as Exploration Manager for Hunt Petroleum. The great loves of his life were his family, church, golf, and traveling. He was a charter member of Kingwood First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and on numerous committees as well as teaching Sunday School. His faith was evident in all areas of his life. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and an encourager for his family. He played golf every Saturday and any other time that he had an opportunity and played many famous courses in the United States, Scotland, England and Ireland. He had one hole in one. He played the Old Course at St. Andrews twice. He and Betsy traveled to almost all of the states and to most of the national parks. His favorite trips were to the mountains and to the Grand Canyon. He shared his knowledge of the geology of the areas that they visited. They also traveled to twenty nine countries. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family appreciates the excellent care that he received from Dr. Thomas Baxter, Dr. Ericka Simpson and Rebecca Axline, LCSW. The family would like to thank his caregivers Eiko Routh, Andres DeLa Cruz, Barbara Scibuola, and the others from Assisting Hands that participated in his care as well as VITAS Hospice. A memorial service will be held at Kingwood First Baptist Church on June 18, 2012 at 2pm with a reception following at the church.
