He was the son of the late Mattie Laura (née Chitty) and Jack Richard Ober. Richard will be remembered by all who knew him as an intelligent man with an independent mind and a quirky love for both honky-tonk and classical music. Throughout his life he was loyal to his parents, grandparents, and friends. Before graduating from Ouachita Parish High School in 1952, he worked for his parents' laundry business while at the same time training himself as a professional photographer. There followed two years at Tulane University, a year at a Roman Catholic seminary in Alexandria, and several years in the US Navy. In 1960 he finished his B.A. at the University of Louisiana in Monroe and went on to LSU for several years of graduate study in Romance languages, specializing in Spanish. In Houston, while teaching Spanish at San Jacinto Community College, he first displayed his remarkable talent for restoring old houses and apartments, doing all the reconstruction, carpentry, plumbing, and wiring himself. Ever one for new adventures, he moved on to Santa Fe, Seattle, and finally to Arizona, first building a house in Hereford, then another in Huachuca City. Through all these years he remained in close contact with his high-school chums from Monroe, Philip Ambrose and Wade Cotton, as well as with Wade's late mother and sisters, Zella, JoAnn, and Kay. He is survived by his devoted companion of 19 years and legal husband for the last year, Douglas Lee Martin. Richard had been in declining health for the last four years under the care of Doug and the VA Hospital in Tucson. He donated his body to the University Of Arizona College Of Medicine in Tucson.
