OWEN Funeral services for Dr. Jason C. Owen, age 89, of Ruston will be held on Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity United Methodist Church. Officiating the service will be Rev. Rolly Walker and Rev. Leslie Stephens. Burial will follow at 3:00 P.M. at the Kilbourne Cemetery in Kilbourne, LA under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston, LA. Jason was a 1941 graduate of Kilbourne High School. He entered the United States Army and served from 1943 to 1946 in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. Following his military service, Jason returned to Louisiana Tech University where he earned his BA in Education in 1947. Further educational pursuits included MA in 1952 from Colorado State University and his Doctorate in Education was completed in 1957 at the University of Missouri. Dr. Owen's professional career began as a 5th grade teacher at Mansfield Elementary. He then moved to Louisiana Tech University where he served as a supervising teacher at A.E. Phillips Laboratory School. Later he became director of A.E. Phillips Laboratory School for 11 years. He completed his teaching career at Louisiana Tech University as a Professor of Education retiring in 1978. After retiring, other professional pursuits included serving on numerous professional education committees including Louisiana Teacher's Association and the North Louisiana Reading Council. Dr. Owen served on Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Accreditation Committee and was listed in Leaders in Education 4th edition. Dr. Owen enjoyed working in his yard and playing bridge.His community activity included becoming the first male president of the Lincoln General Hospital Auxilary. Additionally, he served on the Board of Council On Aging, the Ruston Civic Symphony Board, and was active in the Ruston Lion's Club. Dr. Owen was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston serving in various capacities. He served as Program Coordinator and also on the Louisiana Conference Board. Dr. Owen received many honors throughout his career, but among the most meaningful to him were his recognition as a 60 year Alumnus from Louisiana Tech University, Louisiana Tech University Alumnus of the year for the College of Education, member of the Golden Society, and was recognized as a John Wesley Fellow in 2001. This society recognizes those who exemplify the characteristics of John Wesley as seen through service given to his fellow men. Dr. Owen was preceded in death by his parents: Murrice K. and Evie White Owen and siblings: Marvin Owen and Mildred Philley. He is survived by his brother: Charles W. Owen and wife Mildred, 16 nieces and nephews, and a host of other family and friends. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 from 5 - 7 PM at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston.
