Riser Funeral Home Winnsboro, LA WINNSBORO, LA - Services for Joseph Woodrow Pankey, Sr., 83 of Winnsboro will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 1997 at Riser First National Funeral Home Chapel in Winnsboro with Rev. Charles Langford officiating. Graveside service will be at 4 p.m.Sunday at Greenwood Cemetery in Ruston, LA. Mr. Pankey died Friday, November 21, 1997 at his residence. Joe Pankey had been a resident of Winnsboro since 1946, when he and J. H. Colvin established the Winnsboro Wholesale Grocery, and served the people of the surrounding area until their retirement in 1987. Prior to coming to Winnsboro, Mr. Pankey resided in Ruston, graduating from Ruston High School and Louisiana Tech. He served during World War II with the Army's Seventh Armored Division in the European Theatre, receiving the Purple Heart for wounds received in the infamous Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Pankey was a member of Winnsboro First United Methodist Church, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Former Member of Twin Oaks Country Club. Before ill health prevented, such activities, Mrs. Pankey was an avid sportsman, enjoying baseball, football, golf, and hunting of all kinds. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Katherine Tooke Pankey of Winnsboro; two sons and their families: Dr. J. Woody Pankey and wife Phyllis and sons, Mark and Ron of North Ferrisburg, VT, and Dr. Lee R. Pankey and wife Sharon and children, Todd, Sarah, and Katie of Monroe; brother: Harry Pankey of Monroe; nephews: Whit Pankey of Rogers, AR, Joe Harry Pankey of Baton Rouge, LA; niece: Paige Pankey Sims of Mer Rouge, LA. Pallbearers will be Dr. Mike Tucker, J. H. "Jimbo" Colvin, Mark Pankey, Ron Pankey, Todd Pankey and Joe Harry Pankey. Honorary Pallbearers will be Judge Ben Berry, J. J. "Buck" Hollis, I. Q. Robinson, Odell Bradley, Dr. Roger Smith, and Dr. Jay Busby. Visitation will be Saturday, November 22nd from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
