E. PETERS DIES AFTER LONG ILLNESS J. E. Peters, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Monroe died at his home on St. John street early Sunday morning after an illness that left him confined to his home for two months or more. He was in his 84th year. Mr. Peters was born in a portion of Denmark now a German possession. He came to this country when a young man and entered business at Monroe shoon after he arrived her in 1866. His buiness and holdings grew from a small beginning until at his death he was [considered] as one of the wealthiest citizens of the city. He is survived by four daughters and two sons, Mrs. Whitfield of Alexandria; Mrs. W. A. Whitfield, Mrs. W. J. Bynum, Jr., Mrs. P. S. Mulhearn of Monroe; Fred S. and Ernest Peters. Mr. Peters was a member of Stonewall Lodge Knights of Pythias and that organization will have charge of the funeral. Services will be held at his late home on St. John street at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Interment will be in the city cemetery. Additional Comments: J. E. Peters is buried at Old City Cemetery in a large red brick vault located near the fork in the cemetery road. He owned J. E. Peters on Grand Street in Monroe specializing in furniture, sewing machines, windows, doors, wagons and bicycles. Towards the end of his life, J. E. Peters became an embalmer and opened a small funeral chapel. His daughter, Alwine and son-in-law, Peter S. Mulhearn would direct the business into the funeral home industry. Mulhearn Funeral Homes, located in Ouachita, Franklin and Richland parishes still exists today.
