ELIZABETH PEYTON

Elizabeth Peyton, 91, died Friday, March 8, 2013 in Hartwell, GA. Her husband, 
The Rev. Robert L. Peyton, preceded her in death in 2011. They were married for 
68 years and lived in retirement in Arcadia, LA for 28 years before they moved 
to Hartwell in 2011.

Elizabeth was born in Wesson, MS and grew up in the nearby Pleasant Valley 
community. She received a bachelor's degree from University of Southern 
Mississippi in 1942, and a master's degree plus coursework toward the Ph.D. 
degree at University of Louisiana at Monroe in the 1970's. She taught 
elementary school in Drew, MS, Round Rock, TX, Bastrop, LA and Calhoun LA. She 
worked closely with her husband in his 40 years of full-time ministry and 27 
years of retired ministry in the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist 
Church in the communities of Lake Charles, Arcadia, Bastrop, West Monroe and 
Ruston. She was a leader in numerous church and civic organizations including 
the United Methodist Women, American Cancer Society, Retired Teachers' 
Association and Literature Club. She and her husband received the Heritage 
Award from the Arcadia/Bienville Parish Chamber of Commerce in 1998. She was 
known for her faithfulness to family, church and community and was a mentor to 
many. Her wisdom, energy and enthusiasm for life affected all those around her.

Survivors include her son Lee of Hartwell, and sisters Nancy Zumalt of 
Pearland, TX and Bertha Anna Farmer of Hazlehurst, MS.

She was preceded in death by her husband, son Guy Murray, and sisters Doris 
Sanders, Dorothy Guyton and Edwina Snyder. 

A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Hartwell, GA 
at 1:00 p.m., March 11. A burial and committal service will be held at Pleasant 
Valley United Methodist Church, Hazlehurst, MS at 1:30 p.m., March 13. A 
memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church, Arcadia, LA at 
1:30 pm, March 14.

Memorial donations may be made to the p.m. Robert and Elizabeth Peyton Memorial 
Scholarship Fund for Louisiana United Methodist seminary students (payable to 
Shreveport District of the United Methodist Church with notation for Peyton 
Scholarship, addressed to Shreveport District, P.O. Box 41188, Shreveport, LA 
71134.)
