Rev. Jerry Hilbun will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Andy Hurst. Visitation will be at Kilpatrick Funeral Home in Ruston from 5:00 PM- 8:00 PM on Monday, March 30, 2009. Following the service, interment will be in the Pines Memorial Gardens in Ruston under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston. Mrs. Phillips died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at her residence after a brief illness. Mrs. Phillips was born in Shreveport, LA on September 20, 1925, the daughter of Samuel Madison Thomas and Dora Mae Montgomery Thomas. The family moved to Quitman in 1932, when Mr. Thomas opened Sam Thomas Merchantile. Bettye was a graduate of Quitman High School and a long-time resident of Ruston. She and her late husband, Lamont Phillips, along with their sons were owners of National Jewelry Company which the couple founded in 1954. She remained active in the business for over 50 years. Mrs. Phillips was a devoted wife and mother, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and a past member of the Littera Club. An avid Louisiana Tech fan and supporter, she loved attending and listening to the football games and to both men's and women's basketball. Mrs. Phillips is preceded in death by her parents Samuel Madison and Dora Mae Montgomery Thomas, loving husband of 46 years C. Lamont Phillips, and her brother Samuel M. Thomas II. She is survived by her immediate family of Ruston; sons, Thomas Lamont Phillips and wife Janet Thurmon Phillips and Kenneth Dean Phillips and wife Terri Parisy Phillips. She is also survived by her sister Irene Thomas Muller, Ruston; brother, Harold P. Thomas and wife Mary, Quitman; grandchildren, Dr. Shane Phillips and wife Lauren, Ruston; Ashley Phillips Smith and husband Ben, Atlanta, GA; Elizabeth Phillips Trapp and husband Josh, Hernando, MS; Kim Phillips McCready and husband Ryan, Edmond, OK; and Doug Phillips, Ruston; five great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Opal Phillips Lyles, Ruston; Nita Chapman Thomas, Shreveport; brother-in-law, Steve Phillips and wife Nell, Baton Rouge; numerous nieces, nephews, and special friend and care-taker Joann Bryant. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ed Mariano, Dr. David Osafo, Phyllis Jackson, sitter and Hospice of Caring Hearts for their attentive and loving care they provided to Bettye. Pallbearers will be Mickey Mays, Paul McCormack, Joe Thomas, Sammy Thomas, Billy Phillips, and Randy Fallin. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons Dr. Shane Phillips and Doug Phillips. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, St. Jude's Hospital, or The American Cancer Society.
