Montgomery, AL

Betty Jo Sheppard Pons, 79, a resident of Montgomery, AL, died September 18 at 
home after a brief illness. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, 
September 22 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Episcopal Church.

She was the daughter of Willis Sheppard and Etta Stripling. A native of 
Marion, LA, she graduated with a BA in drama from Louisiana Polytechnical 
Institute. She married the Rev. Albert Pons in 1950 and during their marriage 
had four children. She worked as an elementary school teacher, college 
counselor, and organizer for the March of Dimes. She earned her master's 
degree from Southwest Oklahoma State University. She dedicated her time to 
many progressive causes, including civil rights, peace, and community 
development. She was active in the Episcopal Church and the Democratic Party. 
Throughout her life she stayed involved and supportive of her four children 
and their families: daughter Stuart and her husband Kent Huff, son Michael and 
his wife Sharon, daughter Mary, and son Anthony and his wife Laura; five 
grandchildren, Lena Pons and her husband Ben Busby, Skyler Pons, Sarah Huff, 
Mia Pons and JT Pons, two brothers, Bill and Joe Sheppard, her aunt/sister 
Ellen Wilhite, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Episcopal Relief and 
Development Fund or the Democratic Party.
