PRAGER Callahan-Edfast Mortuary Grand Junction, CO Ray Prager died Sunday at the age of 85. He lived his life as an example of service to others, and touched countless people with kindness, understanding, and non-judgmental Christian faith. He was born in Pittsburgh. In 1943 he joined the Army Air Corps which moved him to the Southern U.S. He married Audrey Bertile Irby and they had a daughter, Donna. His life changed when death took his young bride and he changed his focus to the ministry, nurturing others as they struggled with the difficulties that life can present. He earned a B.A. and Bachelor of Divinity, and became interested in helping people in their time of greatest need, when they were ill or in crisis in the hospital. He worked as hospital chaplain in Baton Rouge, LA, Montgomery, AL, and Alexandria, LA. He was well respected in his profession, offering counseling to fellow ministers and chaplains and developing life-long friendships in the process. He was pastor at several churches in Louisiana, including Faith Baptist Church in Monroe. He was not the stereotype of the judgmental Southern Baptist preacher, instead accepting all beliefs as valid in the sight of God, and seeing good in every person. He renewed his own spirit in the outdoors: hunting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, and seeing beauty in a raindrop. He retired to Colorado to follow his family to the mountains he loved. He raised a loving family who has continued the tradition of service to others through 3 generations. He leaves a legacy of love and caring to his wife, Mary, his daughter Donna Wilson and Elizabeth (Libby) McNeill and son Karl and their families, counting 6 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren. A memorial service to honor his life was held Friday, June 18 at 11:00 in Colorado.
