Visitation will be held at The Cathedral of St. John Berchmans on Friday, January 16, 2015, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at The Cathedral of St. John Berchmans on Saturday, January 17, 2015, at 10:00 am with interment to follow at Forest Park Cemetery. Officiating will be Bishop Michael Duca. Margaret was born in Texarkana, Texas, on May 24, 1927. She completed her formal education there, and attended one year after graduation at Texarkana College. She furthered her education at Southwest State Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas, before returning to Texarkana to work at Mid-Continent Airlines as a stewardess. She met and then married Harold Conrad "Rick" Richter on November 27, 1947 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Texarkana. Having served in the Marines during World War II, soon after the birth of their first son, Rick was called back to service during the Korean Conflict. Shortly thereafter, Margaret and 6-week-old Randy joined him in California, where they lived in a Quonset hut with no laundry luxuries. Upon Rick's release from the Marines, the family moved back to Texarkana where Rick pursued his training as an insurance adjuster. They then made Monroe their home for about 10 years. Rick would remain in the insurance business for the next 40 years as they gained three more sons, David, Kevin, and Mark, and the family made their move to Shreveport. Margaret was a very busy mother of four sons, whose ages spanned 15 years. She was den mother, school fundraiser and organizer, and supporter of each of her sons in their pursuit of jobs, interests, sports and education. For many years, Margaret was an active member of Circle 7 at St. John Berchmans Cathedral. She served in numerous officer and member roles in both the Sacred Heart Ladies Guild and the Catholic Women's League. Her active participation in the Cross Lake Homemakers resulted in wonderful memories and lasting friendships. An especially coveted honor came in 1989, when the Richter family was presented the Great American Family Award by the State of Louisiana's Extension Homemaker's Council. During their 50 years in Shreveport, Margaret and Rick were active in all walks of the Catholic faith, serving wherever they were needed. Bishop William Friend awarded the Diocesan Medal of Honor to Margaret in 1995 and to Rick in 1997. Their last church membership together was at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shreveport. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Rick Richter; parents, Leonard and Helen Browning; brothers, Leonard Thomas "Bill", Jr. and Keith Browning; and sister, Joella Pool. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Randy Conrad Richter and wife, Diane Noles, of Haughton; Fr. David Thomas Richter, of Monroe; Dr. Jon Kevin Richter and wife, Pamela Kinney, of Berryville, Arkansas; and Mark Alan Richter and wife, Mary Carriere, of Shreveport; her brother, John R. Browning, of Texarkana, Texas; and 10 grandchildren. Pallbearers will be her sons and her grandsons, Eric, Adam and Brandon Richter. The Richter family extends special thanks to Bridget Boatman for the loving care she provided to Margaret this past year.
