After graduating Bernice High School in 1941, my mother worked at Hicks General Store in Bernice for 5 years as a buyer and customer service employee with Mrs. G.C. Hicks. Mother and Daddy later married in the Hicks home, which was very special to her. In 1950, they built a home in Bernice and mother became active as a member and teacher, as well as Women's Missionary Union President at First Baptist Church in Bernice during the 50's and 60's; was active in PTA and classroom events, chaperoned FBLA trips for Bernice High School; was a charter member of the Bernice Garden Club, member and teacher at Chatham Baptist Church in Chatham, member of Ruston Quota Club, and a 40-year member at Temple Baptist Church-Ruston. My mother will be remembered for her Christian life of love for God and her family; as a devoted wife and and life partner to my father and his career; as a talented homemaker and hostess to all who entered her home; for her generosity to those in need; and for her 'sweetest smiles' throughout her life, which in her most recent years became more precious and memorable to her family and for those who cared for her.
