He was born March 13, 1926 to the late Leon Henry and Mattie Thompson Robinson and was raised in West Monroe by his devoted aunt, Sybil Duncan. He attended schools in Ouachita Parish and Monroe City School Systems and accepted Christ at an early age, joining the Trenton Baptist Church in West Monroe. Later and after his marriage to Kittye Cyrus Robinson, he united with Jerusalem Baptist Church, Calhoun, LA. He faithfully supported and served his church as a Christian member and was assistant director of the Hospitality Committee. He was also a loyal citizen of the community, helping and lending a hand to those in need; especially the elderly. During the hard times of the 1940's Leon said he was hungry and was looking for a better way. In 1944, at age 17 and underage for the military, he convinced Lawyer Redmond to sign an affidavit for him to enter the U.S. Navy. At this time young black men were not being accepted in the Navy. The then Naval Secretary made the statement, "I would commit suicide before allowing blacks to the join the Navy". However, Leon was accepted and during his initial training in Great Lakes, IL, flags were lowered to mourn the death of Secretary Knox. Leon was on active duty for 20 years and retired at Norfolk, VA as Petty Officer or rank of E-5. Upon returning to Ouachita Parish, he was employed by the Ouachita Parish School System and later was appointed Maintenance Supervisor of the Parish Media Center and also delivery van "pony" driver. He retired from this position after 21 years of service. While in service he married Cleopra Odessa Beasley and to this union 2 sons were born: Leon, III and Lenard Robinson. After returning to West Monroe he met and married Kittye Cyrus Robinson and to this union their daughter Kathy was born. Leon was preceded in death by a son Lenard, both parents, sister, Kathryn Stroud maternal grandmother, Pinkie Thompson and paternal grandfather, Henry Robinson. He leaves to cherish his memory, loving and devoted wife, Kittye C. Robinson, West Monroe, daughter, Kathy Tazinski Wilson, Atlanta, GA, son, Leon Robinson, III, Boston, MA, grandson, Cameron Wilson, Atlanta, GA, a number of other grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters-in-law, Johnnie DeBurr, Ruby Cyrus, Hattie Mae Cyrus and Arthur Cyrus, all of Monroe, Dorice Toston (Frank) and Helen Young both of West Monroe, a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Services, Saturday, 1:00 p.m. at Jerusalem Baptist Church, with Rev. Don White officiating. Interment will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery, visitation 1-7 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Home.
