Born in Meridian, MS, and knowing Country Singer Jimmie Rodgers as "Uncle Jimmie", his family moved to Monroe, LA when he was 3. He graduated from Byrd H.S., Shreveport, LA in 1940. Interested in going to "summer camp" he and his friends decided to talk to the recruiter. He was a WWII vet, who enlisted in the Louisiana Army National Guard in 1940, trained at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX, was stationed in Iceland for 18 months (where the farmers wouldn't let him meet their daughters), went ashore on Utah Beach on D+12, as NCO of a Battery in the 494th AAA Gun Battalion, he participated in the defense of Antwerp from V-1attacks (he also saw his first jet airplane - as it strafed his unit), and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant in 1945. He returned to his home in Monroe, LA, and in 1946 married Evelyn Earline Greer. They built the house they lived in for almost 60 years a room at a time as they could save to buy the materials. He was a machinist until he retired 25 years ago, after 46 years with Motor Supply Co. Jack and Earline attended Memorial United Methodist Church in Monroe. Jack's hobbies were furniture restoration and wood working, singing and performing in community events, and telling jokes. Jack and Earline moved to Elizabethtown, KY, last November to be close to their daughter, Pam, son-in-law, Bill, and grandson, James. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua B. C. Rutledge and Sarah Catherine Ethridge Rutledge; two brothers, Henry R. Mann and W. B. Mann and two sisters, Doris R. Turner and Virginia R. Carlson. Jack is survived by his wife of almost 67 years, Earline, daughter Pamela Ridlon, son-in-law, Bill, and grandsons, Will Ridlon, a nursing graduate student in Columbia, MO, Captain Michael Ridlon, US Army, Ft. Drum, NY, and James Ridlon, who works in Elizabethtown, KY. Pam teaches Middle School at Ft. Knox, KY, and Bill is a retired Lt. Colonel, JA, USAR , and an Army civilian attorney at Ft. Knox. He is also survived by a sister, Ida B. Hayden of Houston, TX. A Memorial service will be Thursday September 5, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church.
