Visitation will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, Louisiana, Saturday, August 7, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. , with funeral service immediately following conducted by Dr. Joe McKeever, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church Kenner, LA. Burial at Lake Lawn Cemetery. She was born at home on September 24, 1916 at Twin Oaks Plantation in Eros, Louisiana. She was a faithful wife, loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great-great grandmother and friend to all. Proverbs 31: 10- 31 describes her attributes. She served her Lord in various ways at Ridge Avenue Baptist Church West Monroe, LA and then as a Christian volunteer teaching English to International students, from Tulane University, at the First Baptist Church in New Orleans and later becoming a member at First Baptist Church Kenner. Upon moving to Denham Springs three years ago, she joined Istrouma Baptist Church. She was an Eastern Star and belonged to the Perseverance Chapter No. 40 and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Spirit of 76 Chapter in New Orleans. She was a member of the New Orleans Art Guild Association and her medium was oils. She especially enjoyed painting landscapes, plantation homes and rural scenes from her childhood memories. On May 6, 1935 Mildred and Stanford Salley were married and resided in West Monroe, LA until moving to New Orleans in 1951. Survivors are her daughters Jean S. Leyda, Baton Rouge, LA Virginia S. Huffman and husband Robert of Denham Springs, LA and reared as her own, Stanford's daughters, Dorothy S. Patrick, Portland, TN, Mildred S. Moore, Marjorie S. Joyner and son- in-law Robert Joyner, West Monroe, LA, daughter-in-law, Odette B. Salley, Mandeville, LA, 16 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 32 great-great- grandchildren. Preceeded in death, her husband of 53 years, William Stanford Salley, son Donald Stanford Salley, parents, Henry Sherrand McDonald and Annie Esther Blackwell McDonald, siblings Paris Ratliff, Brawner, Harry, James and Happy McDonald. Grandson, Johnny Gale Kilgore, granddaughter, Kimberly Wilson, sons-in-law Joel Moore and Denver Patrick. Pallbearers are grandsons Curtis Salley, David Leyda, Douglas Leyda, Timothy Huffman, and Kenneth Baillie and son-in-law Robert Joyner. Honorary Pallbearers are Daniel Huffman, Robert Huffman, Steve Kilgore, Robert and Michael Joyner. The family wishes to thank the employees of St. Joseph Hospice, especially Heather Petit, and Ursula Solomon for their excellent care, and Chaplin Dale Delaune and Shelly Weaver. Also, the helpful hands of Sonya Beadle, Sandra May, Ruth Bergeron, and Theresa Bergeron at White Road Serenity Home in Denham Springs for their comfort and loving care of our Mother and the family members.
