SAVAGE Walter Jackson Savage, Jr., 85, businessman and cattleman, passed away peacefully at his Ruston home on Friday, September 23, 2016 of Parkinson's Disease. Walter was born March 26, 1931, in Warren, Arkansas, son of Walter J. Savage, Sr. and Mary Steadman Savage. A native of Bastrop, he attended Louisiana Tech. Where he was captain of the football team, was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and graduated in 1954 with a degree in Business Administration. Walter met and married Miriam Pipes while at Louisiana Tech. Following his graduation from Tech, Walter served on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps until 1956. He continued a distinguished military career with the Marine Corps Reserve for thirty-two years and retired with the rank of full Colonel. In 1956, Walter established the Fallin-Savage timber business and pursued that endeavor for five years. In 1961, he became a Conoco Oil distributor. In 1969, he additionally became a Purina Distributor. He received nine Purina Chow Honor Council awards during his 25 years in business. The Ruston Junior Chamber of Commerce selected Walter the Outstanding Young Man of Lincoln Parish in 1961. He served as President of the Ruston Jaycees and was a Life Time Member. He also held Life Time Memberships in the American Rifleman Association and the Reserve Officers Association. Walter was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and has served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and on the Finance Committee. In 1982, Walter was elected to the Lincoln Parish Police Jury and served 4 terms. He served as Chairman of the Finance Committee and the Personnel Committee of the Police Jury. He served as the Fourth Region Executive Director of the Louisiana Police Jury Association then served as President in 2001-2002. He served as a Regional Representative on the National Association of County Government. He also served as Chairman of the Coordinating Development Corporation for Northwest Louisiana, Chairman of the 911 Emergency Services, and the Visitors Bureau for Ruston/Lincoln Parish. He served on the Dixie Center for the Arts Board. He was selected for the Robert E. Russ Award in 1999. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Ottis Savage, Vestle Savage, H. O Savage, Volin Savage; Sisters Ettie Bea Mann, Audrie Savage, Oneida Taylor, and Lucy Gober. Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Miriam Pipes Savage; daughter, Claire Carroll and husband Dale Carroll; granddaughters, Mille and Jacob Haymon and Mollie and Will Edmiston; and five great grandchildren, Guy Allen Carroll, Birdie Claire Haymon, Pippa Gwen Haymon, Hattie Ann Haymon, and Boaz Walt Haymon. Visitation will be Sunday, September 25 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. A Memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Ruston. His body was donated to scientific study to Louisiana State University in Shreveport. Pastors Juliet Spencer and Leslie Stephens will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice .
