Burial will be at Mulhearn Memorial Park under the direction Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mrs. Scalia passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012, at St. Francis Medical Center. Mrs. Scalia was born in Monroe, LA on August 7, 1930 to Edward James and Verna LaMonica. She was a cherished only child. She graduated from St. Matthew High School and attended Northeast Junior College for 1 year until she was old enough to enter the St. Francis School of Nursing where she finished 2nd in her class. After completing nursing school, she married Roy Scalia, her high school sweetheart on November 15, 1951. She moved with him to El Paso, TX where he was stationed and she began her nursing career at Hotel Due Hospital. Upon returning to Monroe, JoAnn worked at St. Francis on pediatrics and then as Dr. Roy Talbot's nurse in his practice. She eventually returned to St. Francis and began her life's work of caring for patients and supporting their families. She was well respected and was Head Nurse of the Orthopedic and Neurological floor for 15 years. JoAnn was a wonderful nurse whose positive and caring spirit touched all of those she cared for and worked with. She was recognized often for her work over the years and she served several terms on the Louisiana State Board of Nurses. Many nurses and nursing students benefited from her mentoring over her nursing career. JoAnn was also involved in her community. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters; the Optimist Club; Monroe Garden Club and Woman's Life which she served as President for the Southern Region. JoAnn so loved St. Francis that she returned after her retirement and was a member of the Auxiliary where she and Roy volunteered in the Gift Shop. While JoAnn was a very busy lady in her professional and community life, she was also an extraordinary Daughter, Wife, Mother and Grandmother. JoAnn dearly cared for her Mother in the last years of her life. She cherished each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Roy completed each other; the two truly became one. Both devoted to supporting the other. She became his eyes; he, her memory and her legs. She was preceded in death by her parents and infant brother, Edward James; In- laws, Frank R. and Mary Scalia; Infant son, Frederick Joseph Scalia; Her sister and brother-in-law, Rosalie and Arnold Tucker; and Sister-in-law, Rita Morrison. JoAnn is survived by her devoted husband and "Honey" of 61 years, Roy J. Scalia; her beloved and cherished children, Monica Long and husband, Charlie of Mandeville, LA; Frank E. Scalia and wife, Myra of North Little Rock, AR; and Michelle Conti and husband, Gerald Conti of Monroe. JoAnn always marveled that she, an only child, was Grandma to so many. Her treasured Grandchildren are: Grandsons, Jason Long; Joseph Long and wife, Mary; Jacob Long; Joshua Long and wife, Katie all of Covington, LA; and Samuel Conti of Monroe. Granddaughters, Tori Shelton and husband, Tim of Vicksburg, MS; Kristin Lytle and husband, Dewayne; Sarah Scalia and fiancée, Virgil Carter and Allison Scalia all of Little Rock, AR. She has 14 Great- Grandchildren and another on the way: CJ, Jade and Nathan Long of Australia; Andrew, Luke and Mia Long of Covington, LA; Kate, Jack and Nick Shelton of Vicksburg, MS; Crimson DuVall, Ashton, Braxton and Lily Katherine Lytle and Tinlee Carter all of Little Rock, AR. She is also survived by her brother and sisters-in-law, Frank V. and Marilou Scalia; J.C. and Barbara Scalia and Dick Morrison all of Monroe. Also cherishing her memory is her loving caregiver, Angela Hampton and husband, Lorenzo. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and husbands and fiancée of her granddaughters. Honorary Pallbearers are her cherished girlfriends Jimmie Scott, Dale Moses, Sandy Hopper, Kay Moomey, Emily Higgenbottem, Sylvia Masur, Martha Bennett, Jane Snyder, Cynthia LeDent, Talma Turrentine and Sr. Mary Ann Splevado. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM and Rosary at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Greg Green and Dr. Thomas Morestead, the nurses and staff at St. Francis Specialty Hospital and Christus St. Joseph's Rehabilitation for the loving care they provided to our JoAnn. Memorials may be made to the building fund at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, The Alzheimer's Association, The American Heart Association or Families Helping Families of Northeast Louisiana.
