Joseph Morris Schendle may not have been a celebrated American hero, but to his three sons and his daughter (not to overlook his son-in-law and daughters-in-law) who worshipped him; to his twelve grandchildren who loved and adored him; to his eight great grandchildren (with two more promising to join them soon) who were in the process of discovering what a unique and loving man he was; as well as to countless other friends and even strangers, a most wonderful man has left this world. He was one of a kind and he is simply irreplaceable. A bit old- fashioned, perhaps, but a true Southern gentleman, courtly and chivalrous to a fault. Joe (or Joe-Joe to so many of us) was born in Marshall, Texas on September 5, 1915, moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana at an early age and was raised there by his beloved mother, Pauline, and her sister, Dora. He graduated from Baton Rouge High School, attended and graduated from Louisiana State University in 1936, and married the love of his life, Miriam Seligman, on June 20, 1942. He fought with distinction in the U.S. Army in World War II, rose to the rank of Captain, earned a purple heart and a bronze star before retiring as a Major. After the war he and Mimi moved to Bastrop, Louisiana, where they raised their family and operated and owned four Seligman department stores with his two brothers-in-law. In 1994 he and Mimi moved into the Edgemere Retirement Community where he was living at the time of his death. He loved his family, his country, L.S.U., big band music, and golf which he took up after the war, recording two holes-in-one and becoming a three or four handicap golfer in the process. He bled purple and gold and was certain he could do a better job than any other football coach L.S.U. ever had. He loved Satchmo's "What a Wonderful World" and it is less so as we all mourn and grieve our loss, Rest in peace Joe-Joe, you deserve it and we will love you and miss you forever. He is survived by Jim and Carolyn Schendle of Dallas, Texas, their sons and daughters-in-law, Jason and Tabitha; Matthew and Jean, their children, Cooper, Lily and Margot; Andrew and Erin, their sons, Miles Joseph and Mason; by Bob and Kathy Schendle, their son Robert and daughter Maggi and husband Joe Derry, their children, Fenner and Georgia Blanche; by H. I. and Susan Schendle, their daughter Frances and son Ian; by his daughter Janet and Jay Finegold, their daughters, Erin (and Justin White), Randi and Toby; by his beloved sister-in- law, Phyllis Seligman Raphael; by countless nieces and nephews; and by Macie Travis. The family expressly wishes to thank Tahnell Bailey, Ayana Crow, Sunja Hartford, Treva Phillip, Dicie Sumlin and Karlisha Ware for their care, support, and love during the past several years. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at 11:00 A. M. at Temple Emanuel Cemetery in Dallas. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Huntington's Unit, Attn: Gwen Matthews, Good Samaritan Society Specialty Care Center, 3815 W. Broadway Ave., Robbinsdale, MN 55422 or to BvB Dallas for Alzheimer's Research, Attn: Erin Finegold, PO Box 191403, Dallas, TX 75219.
