SCOTT Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, Conneaut, Ohio J ustice Clifford A. Scott of 686 Horton Rd, Conneaut, Ohio departed this life on Saturday, August 15, 2009. He was the son of the late Gaines and Mary Myles Scott. Justice Scott was born on January 15, 1918, in Monroe, Louisiana. Clifford married his teenage sweetheart Harriet A. Spencer on December 15, 1944 who remained his lifelong partner, which he lovingly referred to as "My Bride." They were married for 63 wonderful years. Justice Scott had one beloved stepson, the late Bishop Robert L. Lyons, and from him fifteen step-grandchildren, thirty-three great grandchildren and twenty-one great-great grand children. He was a very much cherished husband, grandfather, uncle, friend and judge. He completed his primary and secondary education in his town of birth, Monroe Louisiana, where he was lauded as an exceptional athlete by demonstrating his prowess in track and field in running the 100-yard dash in 10 seconds and achieving All State status as a running back for the Monroe Bulldogs. He received his Associates of Arts Degree from Mount Beulah College in Edwards Mississippi and continued on to graduate with a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Southern University in 1942. It was at Southern University where he learned he could achieve any height or goal on which he set his sights. Justice Scott remained an active alumni participant to Southern University for many years through his career and into retirement. He enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1942 and after honorably serving 3 ! years as a Chemical Warfare Specialist 1st Class, he entered Brooklyn Law School where he received his Bachelors and Doctors Law Degrees. A devoted Christian and avid church goer, Justice Scott was chairman of the Board of Trustees at Metropolitan Community Methodist Church in Harlem, New York. Justice Scott was admitted to the New York State Bar, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department in 1950. He commenced a private practice of law in 1950 until 1965, when he was appointed Assistant Corporation Counsel of New York City. In 1955, he was admitted to the United States District Court, Southern District of New York and also admitted to practice before the board of Immigration Appeals. In November 1968, he was elected to the position of Civil Court Judge in New York County. Justice Scott was elected to the Supreme Court of the State of New York in 1974 and proudly served as Supreme Court Justice for 20 years. Justice Scott presided over many notable cases and was recognized in the January 14, 1991 edition of New York Magazine as one of the five toughest judges in the New York State Supreme Court earning the moniker of "Maximum Scott," a name he wore proudly. It was stated by one of his colleagues that "If we could clone him, the system would not be in trouble." Justice Scott loved his adopted home of New York City where he lived for over 60 years. He enjoyed such hobbies as swimming, travel, and was always an avid learner; he continued to follow and debate politics and world events. He remained devoted to his wife Harriet, his family and friends, the church and his community. Family was the most important thing to him, especially children, and until the very last hour in which he was called home, it was obvious that children had a very special place in his very large and giving heart. For all of his remarkable achievements, and titles and nicknames he had garnered through his life, one of the names he most cherished was "Granddad." He was preceded in death by his beloved wife; Harriet A. Scott, parents; Gaines and Mary Myles Scott, stepson; Bishop Robert L. Lyons, brother; Mellon D. Scott Sr., sister; Mollisia Gordon. He leaves to cherish his memory, beloved daughter-in-law, Dorothy Lyons; fifteen step-grandchildren- six grandsons, Robert Lyons Jr. (Shirley) Cleveland, OH; Elijah Lyons of Kingsville, OH (Sheryl) of Fayetteville, NC; James Lyons (Maureen) of Columbus, OH; Jonathan Lyons (Lydia) of Loganville, GA; Samuel Lyons (Ula) of Norfolk, VA; Anthony Lyons of Columbus, OH; and nine granddaughters, Mary Warren of Painesville, OH; Harriet Warren (Randolph) of Sedley, VA; Ruth Jones of Columbus, OH; Orala Sayles (Mark) of Conneaut, OH; Judy Jackson (James) of Columbus, OH; Rolinda Lyons of Conneaut, OH; Felisha Lyons of Columbus, OH; Telesa Wrisley (Phillip) of Sedley, VA; and Anita Lyons of Ashtabula, OH. He is also survived by nieces Jacqueline Scott of San Francisco, CA; Brenda Gaines of Sacramento, CA; and Mildred Scott of San Francisco, CA; nephews Douglas M. Scott Jr. of San Francisco, CA; Harold Scott of San Francisco, CA; and John Woods of Harlem, NY and a host of great-grand- children and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 12:00 PM, at the First Azusa Apostolic Faith Church of God 312 Jefferson Street, Conneaut OH 44030, on the corner of Buffalo and Jefferson streets. Presiding will be the Reverend William James of the Metropolitan Community Methodist Church in Harlem, NY. Calling Hour/Wake Services will take place at the church on Saturday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon, funeral service to immediately follow. Burial services will immediately follow at Glenwood Cemetery, where the American Legion Cowle Post #151 will perform military rites. Reception will take place at the church. In Lieu of flowers memorials in memory of Clifford A. Scott, may be given to his Alma Mater, Southern University Alumni Federation, PO BOX 9706, Baton Rouge, LA 70183 or the Metropolitan Methodist Church, 1975 Madison Ave., New York, NY 10035.
